G5 2.5 Kernel Panic...

I am new to Mac but I not comp illit. When I first recieved my G5 I was installing only large title software and not doing anything out of the ordinary. After getting everything installed correctly I was just surfing this page in Safari and all of the sudden the screen freezes and I get this instruction on a dark translucent black background telling me that I need to press and hold down the power button for a restart. Just as this window shows up the fans start to spool up like crazy and it sounds like a huricane is in my office. Anyway it happened again today all on its own. Stopping by the Apple Store for my PB 15" I asked a guy about it and he said that his G5 2.5 was having Kernel Panic (apparently the name of what i was experiencing as well) quite offten as well. Anyone know anything about this or have a fix or forsee a fix?

    Did you check to see if you have the lastest firmware and OS updates? Did you do a check on your disk? Can you reproduce the problem with a sequence? Did you call Apple support?



    There can be multiple reasons why you get a kernel panic. There isn't a widespread problem that I am aware of. It might be as simple as bad RAM chips or disk errors at the wrong place. You can wait for 10.3.6 to see if the problem will go away, but you are better off trying to isolate and troubleshoot it if it repeats itself. Apple will release a fix if you report a kernel bug that is reproducible.

    Alright...I have done a disk utility from the boot disk as Apple walked me through it. I have done an extended system test using the hardware test disk. Everything on my computer is up to date. Everything comes out clean and ok.

    I just had another Kernel Panic. \ I was actually doing nothing on my computer after walking away to grab something. The applications I had running where, Microsoft Word, iChat, Stickies, and Microsoft Entourage. The extended test checked the RAM to be ok...I just have no idea. Can anyone point me in the right direction. I am open to anything. Again this is on a G5 2.5 with 1.5 gigs of RAM.

    Ok I was looking trough the system.log and I found this. Does it make sence to anyone. The panic happend at around 1:30 AM so obviously it would be at the bottom of this log.     Does it happen when your iPod is not connected? Do you have a file /Library/Logs/panic.log?



    You should call Apple again with the new info. Tell them the problem is not resolved.

    What kind of video card do you have? Does it have 128MB of RAM? Also, what do you have in your startup items preferences? You may want to try shutting down your startup preferences. Also, if your video card doesn't have 128MB RAM I'd look at that as well.

    Since I am waiting for the nVidia 6800 apple gave me the 9600 ATI.

    OK, first of all, have you tried reinstalling the OS? When I bought my first Mac in 2001, OS 9 would crash about every 2 hours. I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled OS 9 and these mysterious crashes went away. If I were in your situation I would try this.



    Also, reseat your AGP/PCI cards to make sure they are solidly connected. Looking at your panic.log file it seems the panics happen in the same spot and the same driver is backtraced (whatever that means).



    I'm assuming the drivers listed in the panic.log file are listed because this was the code being accessed at the time of the panic. The fact that the registers and files listed are always the same and the registers have the same values at every panic would lead me to believe there's an issue with the driver. This is why I suggested a reinstall, maybe your driver somehow got corrupted.



    I'm not an Apple tech. or anything but I would do a reinstall and try to crash the computer again before I called Apple. At least this way you don't have to call them, then do a reinstall, then call them back.

    Ok I talked to apple and acutally they had a good point...He said it may be the fact that I have uneven ram. When I picked up my machine from the Apple Store I asked for a Gig of Ram and so they ADDED a gig of ram. This made my ram look like 2: 256 mb and 2: 512 mb. So he had me take out the 512 for now just to see if it would happen again. What I am going to do is have my 512 mb ram checked out by an Apple Specialist here in town while the machine gets some time to mess up. Then once I know that my 2 512 sticks are fine I will simply replace the two 256's and run at 1 gig which is what i wanted in the first place. Oh and I also reseated my video card but it looked fine. This is just a hunch but I have a feeling my computer is crashing when ever it is about to go to the screen saver. So any comments would be helpful but I am going to get to the bottom of this and get back to you all.

    If you have 2 sticks of 256 and 2 sticks of 512, that wouldn't be uneven RAM. The G5 requirement is that you install RAM in pairs, not that all RAM has to be the same size. The only way that 2x256 + 2x512 would be an issue is if they mixed up the matching and put a 256 with a 512, know what I mean?

    Ok well new news. Apple told me that the guy was wrong and infact it is ok as long as you have the same speed ram and it is in pairs. So I have the 512's back in and they have me running extended tests back to back to see if a peice of hardware will fail.
