IT is the year of the portables for reasons unrelated to a declining desktop. Where the PC world really can not compete as well with apple portables as they can with desktops. This is where creating all of your own parts is a giant advantage.

PC portables with faster processors burn laps, drain batteries are heavy

portables are powerful enough for graphic pros finally

A powerbook is a real computer and people can really replace a desktop

 and because Steve says so

    hum...

i think that portables where powerfull enough for graphic pros since the wallstreet back in 1998. they where as fast or faster than the not yet released imac (same mobo/sisbo) they where actually the most powerfull G3 ever, at that time, so what's new...? they are powerfull enough for 4.5 years now,

i think you have to find something else to smile about.

I wish Steve didn't say that 2003 would be the year of the portables. We already had a year of the portables... 2001. The TiBook came out in January and iceBook later in the year. They were huge hits.

Then came 2002, the year of.... stagnant desktops? The iMac was released in January, and hasn't been updated in almost 13 months now. The eMac was released, which is an ok computer, but needs an update almost as badly as the iMac. The new PowerMacs came out and weren't all that much better than the ones they were replacing.

Laptops are great and all, but I don't have any need for one. I just want a desktop that is cheap and fast to run OS X. I wish I could run OS X on a PC, but I'm stuck with overpriced and underpowered computers to run the best OS in the world.

Please Apple, why can't 2003 be the year The Desktop Strikes Back? Oh yeah, Motorola...

I agree with this train of thought. It seems that everything is going portable these days. I think that if Apple releases an extreme enabled tablet with a modest HD it would be a winner. Imagine being able to sit down in a comfy chair with a tablet to review documents, view movies, surf the web and listen to music - all in a convenient tablet package (as opposed to a heavier, noisier and warmer laptop!). This would not replace your desktop/laptop - but complement it. (may help sell some gear to potential switchers like me! )
