The problem I talk about in that thread is that apps that have many elements to resize and move around as windows resize are intimately linked with the calculations that have to be done by the CPU resizing and moving those elements around. Unless Quartz 2D Extreme does these calculations for the CPU, it won't help with single-window apps cluttered with custom elements.
Games aren't magically saved by GPUs either. The CPU still has to calculate a 3D scene before sending it off to the graphics card which can add effects and display everything on your monitor.

No need for a looong image. Tile background sections on a poly piece by piece and stitch them together on the fly. There are a ton of variations and ways to handle those elements without ever having to go wider than a comfortable graphics editing window.
So you mean to create multiple squares (for sake of simplicity) with each square having a certain picture on it? Then tile those squares together to make the picture?
So it would be like tiles for tile-based games like Diablo/DII then. I think I gotcha.
Do you know if there are any collision checkers when using these 2D squares? Also, is there a way to do more than edge-checking? I wouldn't want to hit the transparent edge of a square and have the fighter die. I don't want the fighter to die unless it ran into a wall/obstacle.
