You simply don't understand that in life there's no greater blessing than beint 1337 on AppleInsider! Sheesh!

I have a thought, no one here really has any advanced info. I bet if someone was actually blessed with this kinda of news, they would be so scared of screwing over thier friend, they wouldn't say anyhting.</strong><hr></blockquote>

If you ask me, I don't have any advanced info. I'll tell you when I do, whatever it is. There are ways to do it so that nobody can catch you red-handed.

Personally, I doubt the whole story about the beige boxes. I just wanted to say it should be possible to learn something about the CPU even in a welded shut box.

[quote]The G5 they got was indeed in a welded shut beige case, no GUI. They were to run USB and Firewire tests on it and basic [relevant] crunching algorithms. No benchmarking of any kind. And this happed awhile ago. It's been almost a year since they got it (and later returned to apple). Apparently it had USB 2 on board as well. <hr></blockquote>

Yep. And they were even called G5 on the Apple litrature. The one I saw did have OSX on it though.

Thought at the time they were pulled, all of a sudden, cos they were moving into production, but they were just killed off.

This is such an old rumor. Probably true, but totally irrelevant since Moto couldn't get it up.

"Darn, Steve, those are amazing! Soo fast!"

"Blahblah. I'll kill the project. That'll teach them messing with me! Stupid I-am-not-switching because there-is-no-XPress-yet idiots! If they want to run old software, they can as well run it on old hardware, morons!"

    "Uh, uh.. I don't think that's a good idea.."

    "Who cares! you're fired!"

If this is true, then why isn't Motorola selling them to the customers who buy the G4? Why isn't it on their web page with the other 85xx series chips? Seems to me that if Apple changed their mind on the G5, then Motorola would just list it on their web page and start selling them. They wouldn't just throw it away or sell it at a later date.

From what I gathered the G5 had huge heat problems and was abandoned because of that.

It would be funny after all of this if Motorola actaully produced the G5 for apple and not IBM. Now wouldn't it?

That wouldn't be funny at all. It would be a sad sad day to find out the Moto was producing the G5.

And Gambit, why do you think he's not telling the truth? He even posted the company he was talking to about it ( as he pointed out AMORPH REPLACED THE COMPANY'S NAME WITH THE COUGHS ). And its not like he got any info on the computers. He's just confirming that this old rumor about beige-boxed test G5's that was kicking around was indeed true. I don't see the motivation to make that up. Its the truth.

Maybe Moto and IBM were competing with each other on the G5 and IBM won. Could that not be the reason apple pulled the Moto boxes? Yea maybe not...

That's exactly what the speculation is.

    (pure speculation follows)

Apple, around June 2002, wouldn't commit to an x year or y unit/year contract for Mot -&gt; Mot doesn't develop it past early prototypes.

Why wouldn't they do that? Heat? Low performance? High price? Who knows!

But they clearly have to have _something_, otherwise this is just insanity writ large. The IBM PPC 970 seems to be precisely the chip Apple would want in all respects - the only things we don't know are price & the rest of the motherboard chipset.

But does it make sense to wait an extra 3-9 months to skip over an entire level of performance? Maybe... it depends on what exactly Mot offered. If Apple would have to buy 2,000,000 G5s to get a decent price - on a chip they expected to drop after just one year - that would be nuts too.

It is also possible Apple will use both chips, but that would basically be dependent on the Mot chip having power requirements (and presumably performance) more like a G3.

    Who knows.

I'm at the point now where I don't care WHAT they do. As long as they do SOMETHING. I am so sick of the G3's and G4's. The G4's came out 3 years ago! It's just downright sad.

what do you all think -&gt; how much R&D was needed to make the 970?
