I have 3 volumes on 2 disks, one volume is just for a local backup, can I 'hide' it by having it NOT mount at bootup. When needed I would just mount it using Disk Utility.
Any ideas?

You could put in a startup item (/Library/StartupItems) that dismounts the drive after startup (umount -f /Volumes/whateveryourvolumenameis)
