ATI 9700 Pro: How soon?

any speculation? days? weeks? months?

seems rather strange to have a BTO option that prevents you from completing an order... why not accept it for building and give an estimate on shipping time?

IIRC the geForceTi didn't come out 'til 6-months after they said you could get them in the Dual Gig DA intro'd in January.

Argh. Our research project is hinging on deciding between the GF4Ti and the 9700Pro. We'd prefer the Pro, but... crud.

    I think I'd wait for the 9700Pro.

But the PC will have the 9900 Pro months before we get the 9700 Pro.

Sad becuase I love the 9700 Pro in my PC rig I built.

I want it in a Mac too.

I need a reason to get rid of the damn thing.

According to the ATI reps at MWSF, March 2003.

The 9700 needs a newer opengl and may be waiting on 10.2.4.

I really hope the reps were just playing it safe.

I can't believe that Apple would go over a month with basically an invalid option in the configuration.

I'm sure I'm not the only person it would piss off.

At least I received a curteous reply from the Apple Store when I complained although they didn't say why they did it or when the card would be available.

Why can't you just get a retail 9700 Pro and stick it into a Mac? I mean is there a good reason (besides ADC)?

    Because it won't work.

REally. Ok. That's interesting. Is it a hardware issue or driver issue?

I've always thought that 99% of AGP graphics cards work in Macs just like PCs. Maybe some of the advanced features don't work, but the card itself does.

Honestly, being a PowerBook user I haven't really looked into this much, but it just surprises me.

It's not an invalid option - the option does say coming soon or some such wording.

Besides, didn't Apple do this with other options before... like the Geforce 4 Ti? There were others, I just can't remember them right now.

They've even done this with their own hardware... announced it, made it available to order, but it wouldn't ship for over a month.

It's a hardware issue with how ATI does something. It's not an issue with Macs because Nvidia's cards generally just need the mac firmware to work. As best as I can tell, it's only a problem because ATI is either too lazy or too stupid to fix their glitch

This is ridiculous. The R350 is going to be out at CeBIT 2003 in March, leaving us Mac users a generation behind again. If anyone has one of the new Power Macs can you do me a favor and find out if there are any drivers in the OS for the 9700? If so we should be able to just flash the BIOS and install the drivers with any off the shelf Radeon 9700 Pro like with the 8500. Just release it already so you can get my money ATI.

Part of the reason for the 9700-on-Mac delay is because ATI has re-written their Mac drivers from scratch. This will (hopefully) make them much better, and it may also mean that they'll be able to deliver new products more quickly. Old code gets harder to update and maintain which often delays product introductions.

I called it 'invalid' because you can not complete an order with it selected. If you add the 9700 and click 'continue' you are told to remove the 9700 in order to continue. Apple has pre-announced hardware before but they're always taken your money and made you wait after providing an estimated ship date. AFAIK this is the first time that they've had an option that prevented them from taking your money. For people with expiring hardware discount assets that's a problem

[quote] ATi sources report that despite problems with certain component suppliers for their Radeon 9700 Pro graphics cards that Apple is offering along with the new 2003 PowerMac G4s, the first 9700-equipped PowerMacs should begin shipping in about three weeks.

Looks like we'll have them in three weeks.

Ah, hmm. I have no idea. The poster above stated ATI told him in March. I assume that was for retail versions and not related to Apple using them. If they are delayed for Apple to have them exclusively, hopefully it won't be a long wait.
