the new iMac - what type of RAM?

hi there. I'm going to buy a new iMac as soon as it's available here in Switzerland. 256MB RAM isn't enough for me, I want 768MB total. So...the prices on the apple store are pretty steep...I will definitely not spend 300$ for 512MB RAM. Does anyone know what kind of RAM I have to buy and where I can buy it for a price that's payable?

SO-DIMM. I think 512 is the max, so I would go pop a 512 chip in the lower memory bay for a total of 768 megs. A 512 so-dimmm is avalable for about 180 US dollars.

I just bought a 512 MB chip from <a href="http://www.crucial.com"; target="_blank">Crucial</a>. 512 MB, PC133, CL3 SO-DIMM. I paid $215, which is a few bucks more than some places, but they've got great quality, and I had the chip the next day (even to my igloo in Canada). Of course I won't have my iMac until next week...

According to <a href="http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/hardware/Developer_Notes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/iMac/4_Expansion/index.html"; target="_blank">this page</a> in the developer notes, you have to use PC133 RAM in the user-accessible slot. I think it's because you shouldn't mix PC100 with PC133 in the same machine. Apple uses PC133 RAM in the internal slot. (even though it's got a 100 MHz bus)

yeah, crucial is great...ram comes quickly and packaged nicely....free shipping in the united states too....512 so dimms are not cheap, but i'm hoping that 768 of ram keeps me from want to add anymore at a later date (adding another 256 would be cheaper, but i know i would want to up it later.....)g

Kingston RAM is really good RAM. I found with other RAM that it did not work properly with my B&W PowerMac. Finally I got some Kingston RAM and it work with no hicup. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />
