of course the challenges here are:

    1. seamless high quality linux hardware and software engineering

    2. attractive interface design

    3. quality assurance and support structures

linux is like a lego set except when i was a kid i was never able to build those hardcore lego shite i think i was just making houses (OMFG why was i making houses not cars or planes or stuff!!! (i am a guy)

use old PCs, anything over 500 mhz will work, toss in a tuner card (with hardware en/transcoding to your preferred codec, i would say use mpeg 2 for DVD capability) ~384 mb ram (1gb if ya wanna do tons of extras) toss in a cheep-o vid card with s-video out and a $2 1/8->RCA adapter and maybe a DVD burner

(edit) you will want at least 100 gb hdd too for yourself...the breakdown on these tends to be roughly 1GB/hr

On this box, toss mythTV and you will be good for SD stuff...this can be built for ~200 and a saturday...used PCs are cheap...really cheap...check your classifieds

also watch episode 2 of "Systm" for a great how to, and ignore their specs unless u need HD

    (edit)

MythTV is an Opensource Linux bacxed tivo clone

The tuner card will cost between $40 and $100 USD

The video card shouldnt cost any more than $40 USD (all you need is an nvidia 4000 series with tv out...and they are cheap now)

ram is fairly cheap ~40 for a 512 stick

that comes out to $180USD Not sure what that means where u are but it should be a lot cheaper than $2000...

Old, 500-1.2GHZ PCs run in the newspaper here for ~$40-$200...and can easily be talked down...just show them the best buy weekly circular

look at all this crap you guys have to do to get linux working...

i tried linux and after looking at "man pages",rpm's,and spending countless hours configuring it to get minor things working, i felt like i was working as an employee for a linux company!

instead of linux working for you, you're working for it!

who has time for all this nonsense?

    sheeesh get a mac already.

linux will not penetrate the masses until they make it easy enough for your aunt polly in madison to run without configuring every little thing. if you're willing to spend hours, and hours, and hours, setting up linux, god love ya. me, i just wanna get stuff done.
