i'm still surprised there has been no leaked info.... must be really tight security on peeps? Normally, there is some kind of guessing game going on for specs... there really hasn't been much. If a 970MP is announced I wonder what the shipping date would be... it would be a hot item too!

One more thing......... the new powermac nano! running at 2.7.5 GHz!
I'd be happy if they even brought out 3 to 4 processor machines using the existing 2.0/2.3/2.7 G5 chips shipping. Could they do that?
That would be easier than getting IBM to push out the 970MP.....
What ever it is... i'm getting one................i started this thread in june, when I needed one. I've been reading the rumors since they first started to sprout along time ago....now I have to get one.... i can't justify waiting any longer...... this is the last event to wait for.... I'll make what ever I get last for 2 or 3 years. By then intel should be running smoothly....
I'm similarly-minded but want to hear at least one review first. I hope they're delivering one to Macworld / Tidbits / ?? today so they can try it out.
If our collective wish-lists are met, they will have changed enough things that I would want someone to try it hands on before I order.
With the new iMac, one is sure: the next Power Mac will sport PCIe graphics and probably slight or no clock speed increase. Which leads to the dual dual-core model at 2.5 GHz at most.
Well, the iMac is at 2.1. S'okay. Slimmer enclosure etc. Pretty good.
PowerMac?
Obviously no clockspeed improvements, I'd say.
2.0, 2.3, 2.5.
Dual Core.
Dual Dual Core for the top model.
Price cut would be nice.
PCI-Express almost certainty. With better Ati-X600 cards at least...and...
...options for the Nvidia 7800 I hope.
The PowerMacs must be just around the corner...
Lemon Bon Bon
Well I hope you are right. Indeed, PCI-e is very good news; something to hold us for awhile. And presumably no big speed changes, so we'll hope dual-core 2.3 beats single-dual 2.3 out there now. But I just wonder when. This fall? January? I really, really hoped to buy soon, and now it is more of the waiting. Not Paris. Not now. I hope the Pro line isn't being so pushed back on priorities at Apple that pro users are going to perpetually be the last to get the good stuff. FCP is a world-class program, and it would be nice to get some capable, more powerful hardware to drive it.
Can anyone explain me why this line-up would be in any way enticing to buy? All Powermacs going dual core, at 1.5GHz+, OK, I can see the attraction -- 4 * 1.5GHz >= 2 * 2Ghz (for the smallest model) would be faster in most circumstances, so people would really want to buy this. Even PC folks might get interested.
But only doing the top and most expensive model Dual-dual, just to be able to keep a high gross margin and try to get more people to spend more $$$? I'm just not convinced this would be a smart move for Apple. (Of course, I'm also pretty certain that's exactly the way they'll go, which'll make for one less G5 sold: mine).
I currently think the processor speeds are no the real problems for Apple PM's
If I had the ability to add any PCI-e card I would be way more happy than I am now.
And to be able to use DDR2 HOLY CRAP that would speed these babies up tremendously... I mean the G5 has the ability to use the ram so give it the fastest ram available.....
Of course dualcore would be great but I am not so sure that the current dualcore from IBM are really that much faster than the dual 2.7 PM now.
Of course with the above goodies I would say sure its faster, but without???
Compulsive
BTW I am buying immeadiatly (i run dual 2.0 now) for the DDR2 and the PCI-e) but even if the processrs stayed the same I would probably go for the 2.7
It would be pretty interesting if Apple were to introduce a dual-core model at MWSF? Probably not going to happen as this could erode PM sales at the high end.
Like others have said, DDR2 and PCIE seem to be givens whenever the new PM's are released. Cool! Now if these are 4-core PM's (at least one model), I'd definitely get one.
On Apple's current stratigy, it seems obvious that Apple wants to grow market share (a la Mac mini and iMac versus PM), since these are lower price points for switchers. Your not going to get too many high end switchers as the PC boxen (Boxx, Alienware, etc.) are a very small % of the total mix, and those fanbios are just as entrenched as us PM fanbois (thus Apple can neglect us since the rate of defection is presumably low).
On the PB side of things, this is a tough call, it could have PCIE and DDR2, but at best probably will be 7448 at 2GHz max, will this get any switchers, at Apple's price points? Probably not. Will it keep the PB fanbios inline?
I wasn't a PB fanbios to begin with, but given the current near term scenario above, I switched to a 2.2GHz AMD, ATI X700 (PCIE), 2GB 400MHz DDR, 8X DL DVD, USB2, BT2, 60GB 7200RPM HD, etc. lappy for $1,700 (delivered). Apple won't be able to touch this level of system performance until they get the Mactels, especially at this price point! And lappy sales are (have been) the largest growth area right now. This, in my opinion, IS the main reason for the Mactel switch. Erosion of existing (and future) lappy sales given the increased market share of lappies overall. Yugo engine at Ferrari prices! Not going to happen.

I am a switcher from a year ago. I use FCP, Adobe CS, MS Office day and night. I have Zero intrest in the Power Mac. It is nice to look at but I am at the point in my life that less clutter means true happiness and if having less performance means less crap in my office/study, so be it. Of course, I don't make my living in FCP, just the other two. I love the iMac and Mini because you don't have to deal with a HUGE box under your desk.
You were in saying that you are not going to get many high-end switchers with current offerings (my days of storming Omaha Beach are behind me) but it is clear that Apple has seen this is not where the money is made. Evidently, the iMac is where the money is because 3 revisions in 1.5 years? is a huge sign of their direction.
I can't wait until they go MacIntel because I am grabbing me a new 20" or bigger iMac as soon as they become availible on the website. I would love to have DirecTV in my study on my computer. I am half tempted to order one now but I am going to wait it out for a iMacIntel.
I have Zero intrest in the Power Mac. It is nice to look at but I am at the point in my life that less clutter means true happiness
Your point is well taken. Not everyone wants, or needs, the PM, and Apple has steadily increased the capability of the iMac to the point that it will meet the needs of most people.
I don't want the huge box either, but I want the extra PCI slots, the ability to easily upgrade to more powerful video cards, and multiple processors so I won't spend so much time watching my older Powerbook crank away in Final Cut. Apple has always marketed the PM (and large, high-priced LCD displays) to those who want the fastest, most capable (but not tidiest!) hardware to get things done.
I just hope that market isn't being forgotten. It isn't their bread and butter - despite presumably higher margins, PM sales are probably a fraction of what they make from iMacs, iBooks and Minis, but - we're still out here, Apple, and we still want the best you can offer.
Apple sells all kinds of pro software. FCP, Shake, Logic, etc. They'll continue to sell the hardware to take advantage of it, too.
The OTHER main reason for the Mactel switch, software availability and installed base of Wintel. Everything you mentioned is mediacentric, fine, I don't think BG and SB give a damn, about that relatively small segment of the desktop universe. The x86 could level this playing field WRT games, business, engineering, and science applications. This addresses the software side of things, but you still have the entrenched installed base (specifically businesses), THAT will be a tough nut to crack.
you still have the entrenched installed base (specifically businesses), THAT will be a tough nut to crack.
Though it WILL help for Apple to be able to answer the question "how fast is that thing" with "as fast or faster than anything you have now." Then it comes down to the OS - a strong point, incl. security - software - and compatibility, always a huge issue. Here's hoping Apple-Intel move a lot of macs, and possibly a lot of business software (e.g. Office) along with it.
It will be interesting to see how Apple positions itself after the Intel switch (I'm saying this as someone looking to buy a PPC PM soon). If Apple is waiting -long enough- to get powerful (including dual-core) chips from Intel, perhaps they can reposition themselves as creators and sellers of premium hardware (in addition to the media hub, iPod, iMac etc). They had that position once - arguably still might - with graphics/video/other content creators. Perhaps Apple can hold and extend that reputation. A tough nut well worth cracking, and fun to watch them do so.
apple has increased the shipping times on ALL PowerMac's today! Doesn't matter if it is BTO, they are all 3-5 day ship. I saw that apple is having a saturday meeting for apple retail stores... someone had posted that they had one last weekend to? is there confirmation?
Since, the PM/PB are pro series computers and the iMac has PCIe, DDR2 standard now... My guess is that the new machines could all be using this in an update soon. I guess Tuesday would yield a new PM/PB lineup? With the vPod/iMac announced traffic should increase to the apple site, so no real announcement would be needed to get PM/PB into view...and they aren't really the consumer target...
I was/am ready to purchase today... wasn't going to wait any longer... but really it would be a waste of $$ to not hold out until new hardware is released...I'll make my G4/733 last I guess. My work just upgraded me to a DP2.0/ATI x800, so I'd really love to have something that smokes it at home to use!

Literally
Not that big a deal from 2.7 but would allow steve jobs to wave the bigger dick and say: "we did it, we did it!"

no doubt! if they aren't much better than the current line up, It might be wise to get an older one and spend the cash difference on extra stuff!
