click of death: dead HD or just reformat?

I have an external Lacie that I have left on for the past 2 weeks with the rest of my rig.

Getting back today I heard it clicking... a sound I heard a few years back on a different Mac just before impending HD death.

At the time I transfered my data to a new hd, reformatted the "clicking" one, and used it as a secondary drive with non essential data (my download HD).. never had a problem again.

Now then, was I lucky, or is the clicking a hardware problem that should mean "throw it away"?

Any possible remedies? I'm transferring stuff off it now and getting ready to kill it accordingly..

I'd just toss the drive myself. Inevitably something ends up on a HD that you want to keep, and it will die and there goes your data with it.

Now if you want to just back up your MP3's on it, sure why not.
