    The iBook comes with a consumer-oriented software package, with things like AppleWorks and games. The Ti doesn't have those but comes with things like Graphic Converter, Art Directors Toolkit, Snapz, etc. Personally I think it would be nice if Apple would AUGMENT the software package on the Ti so you'd get everything from the iBook plus "pro" apps, but there you are.



    To make it a more fair comparison, you should add $100 to the iBook to bump the HD to 30GB and drop $300 from the Ti to go back to the standard 30. Especially since, if buying an iBook, I'd want the biggest drive possible (since it's hard to replace) but on the PB it's relatively easy to swap in a larger drive later, should you need it.

    The iBook architecture isn't designed for easy access to the hard drive. In fact, swapping the hard drive on an iBook will void the warranty, even if done by an authorized service provider.



    (Though it can be done through the Applestore as a BTO.)

    I agree on the hard drive issue with the iBook; it is on rubber mounts in order to protect the hard drive from the shock of a seventh grader dropping it; and it is a tight space (only a 9.5mm hard drive, not the standard 12mm drive fits in the iBook). That said, you need to consider whether this is merely a supplement to a desktop computer, or more of a replacement for one. And, if your use is simply word processing, Internet, and the occasional Photoshop file, the iBook in its new configuration is more than enough to replace a desktop. Movies, graphics authoring; heavy special effects in Photoshop; that's where the G4 comes in.

    This is a big issue for me. I have an iBook 500 which is too slow. I would love to upgrade.



    Are both the new 667 Ti and the 700 (14") fast?

    Is one noticeably faster?



    I often just put my iBook on the car seat and truck it around. Is the Ti too delicate for casual use on the road?



    Is the screen on the new Ti getting as good as the iBook?

    Paul, There is really no comparing the two. They are targeted towards different markets: one being a consumer level machine, the other Pro. So I would want to ask you all kinds of questions like. "What do you do with your Mac?" "What do you want to do with this portable?" etc, etc.



    If you MUST compare, the G4 PowerBook blows away the G3 iBook. But the iBook is less expensive and VERY capable for doing many fun Mac things (iTunes, iMovie, etc.)



    Which is the better deal? The iBook. You can do almost everything on it that you can on the TiBook (except Final Cut Pro). Of course it runs slower, but look at the price difference.

    Edit: also i always have been on "consumer" computers.... I'd like to get the "power" hardware... I mean I really think I would use it...

    I had a 500MHz iBook and traded up to the new 667 Ti. The iBook is FAR more rugged. I just lugged it around; the Ti doesn't go anywhere naked. For one thing, it's a big psychological leap from a $1,200 12-inch plastic laptop to a $2,500 15-inch metal one.



    I think the screen on the new Ti is just as good as the iBook's.



    About swapping the hard drive, I think Apple deliberately made the iBook case hard to access. I tried to get the bottom off mine and just finding all the screws was complicated; they're hidden everywhere. Once I got them out I couldn't get the bottom off anyway. I finally gave up for fear of busting the thing. On the PowerBook, Apple actually includes directions in the manual for replacing the hard drive, and they expect you to be able to remove the bottom (you have to do that to get the AirPort card in).

    That's only if Jaguar's released at MWNY. It might not be released until September.

    dude, i know exactly what you mean.. its weird in my house my mom is like that and my dad is indifferent and i am vocally against it...

    Why do you say that the iBook isn't capable of FCP?
