eMac overpriced FOR EDUCATION!!!

Now that the eMac is available for retail as well, it is no longer much of a deal if you are an education customer.



(Note, all prices in Canadian $$)



Retail eMac (Apple Store) $1699

Higher-ed eMac (University) $1979



What's the difference between these models? The ed. machine has a Combo drive, whereas the retail has a CD-RW. That's the only difference I can find. So, is the upgrade to a combo drive worth ~$300? I wouldn't say so. Right now, I'd certainly go for the retail version, even though I qualify for the ed. pricing.



And then there's the questions of which drive is better suited to an Ed. model. I'd say put combo in retail and CD-RW in Ed, personally.

    Well, you don't want CD-RW in education to keep the kids from ripping off software from the machines. That's why the base edu eMac is CD-ROM only.



    Agreed that the new pricing makes no sense though. Educators get an eMac with no modem and a plain CD-ROM drive for US$1049. At retail it's US$1099 and the drive is bumped to a CD-RW and you get a modem.



    THAT makes no sense.

    For Schools the base rig (CD-ROM and no modem) is $999.

    Yes, for institutional purchase, not individual purchase, which is what i was talking about. I should have mentioned that.

    guess it depends on what your school gets.



    at the U of MN, the prices are as follows.



    $1,025 low end. (no modem)

    $1,221 combo (modem)

    $1,484 512MB ram, emac stand



    in this case it's a bunch more to buy through the school than through reg. retail. weird.

    Well I can see how the lower grade schools would have little need for a DVD-R, but College and even High school kids are doing video now-a-days.



    Thirty years ago Sliderules were not allowed in school, twenty years ago it was calculators, ten years ago it was not only needed but incouraged to have a computer for school work. Today kids use Digital cameras, make videos, etc. as class work.



    For some schools, I think a DVD-R is a must have option.
