MacBook Pro Boot question...?

All,

Sorry, I am not extremely familiar with Macs.

I was looking at the MacBook Pro and had a couple of

questions.

1) Will the system boot from a USB or Firewire drive?

2) If so, could you use that device to install the OS?

The reason I am asking is that I have had the DVD drive

go out on my Notebook. It is a Windows notebook and the BIOS will NOT support booting from a USB based DVD drive because it is about 3 years old. I wanted to install a clean copy of XP and then Vista, but with no boot drive

I can't do it.

This is no big deal as I can purchase a replacement drive

easily on ebay and replace it myself. However, the drive on the MacBook looks like it would be a real pain to replace. I would not want to pay to have someone replace it either. I'm guessing that by the time it dies the machine will be worth almost as much as it would cost to fix. Hence, I would like to be able to still hook up an external drive and carry on the same as if it was the original drive.

I know you could hook up an external drive and use it as the internal one once the OS is running. I'm only concerned about the case where you want to boot off of the drive.

Thanks for the info.

Regards,

Ocriss
