I'm going to call apple tomorrow to confirm the 3-5 day ship period. If for real.. I'm ordering one tomorrow!
I called Apple earlier today to confirm the 3-5 est ship days. She laughed and said it was just a typo on their web site. Yhea Right! Seem there's a lot of typos on the iMac check-outs. I guess the low price in the above quote is just another typo to get our hopes up.
I have a hard time believing the shipping dates were a typo, particularly because some people saw 1-2 days and others 3-5 days. That would have to be repeated human error. On the other hand, unless someone at Apple miscalculated, it is hard to imagine how inventory could go from 1-2 days to 3-5 to 3-4 weeks in less than a day. On top of that, there has been only one report of someone ordering it and getting confirmation of its shipping, and that's the yutz who reported the story to MacNet. Without ANY other confirmations, it seems that this was merely a tale.
That low price is due to the education discount ($50, I believe).

The price I was referring to was $1,899.00!!
This is 100.00 off reg price not 50 like it should be for the education discount.. My quoted at the education site was for $1,949.00 not $1,899.!

The $1899 price is if you purchase through the ED store for your school, not for yourself.
I called the Apple store in Tampa, where I usually go to look at New Mac stuff. I had talked with a guy there a few months ago, and since he was so nice and not so pushy I asked him for a card. When I called of course I asked to speak to him. I explained my interest in buying a new 17"imac and asked when they'd be available to pick up at the store. He said he expected them in on Friday, August 9. I asked if they were sold already and he said he would put my name on one when it arrived. This is the good news. The bad new is that it won't have OS 10.2.
Either way you'll see people with iMacs this weekend at the latest!
You know, it may be just me, but I am tired of never being able to buy a "NEW" mac. When SJ announced the 17" imac, he said "available in 2 weeks". Call me Mr Silly, but to me, that means you can actually go and buy one in 2 weeks. Now, over 2 weeks later, you place an order, and it says "3-4 weeks". An apple rep I spoke to this morning said that at the current rate of shippment, it may well be longer than that. What it boils down to, is another 2+ month wait for a new machine. I hate to say this, but why do Dell, or HP never have these issues?? SHIP ALREADY!
Hey Murbot how long do you plan on keeping that iMac?
Oh btw if you ever feel like selling you computer(s) could you let me know before you eBay them? Incase I'm interested in buying them.

I don't bother to say anymore. Chances are that when it comes to my keeping a Mac, anything I say is bull anyway.

I would sue them, but: 1, I'm too lazy 2, I don't have money for a lawer 3, I love apple too much to take legal action against them.
I forgot to check the edu store (my mom is a school board member). They do say 3-5 days, but I'd be skeptical.

I priced out the same system above except for the additon of 512 mb ram 1 dim. This one change make the ship date change from 3-5 days to 3-4 weeks.
Man it sure does take along for such a minor mod.

80GB Ultra ATA drive
Apple Pro Speakers
Keyboard/Mac OS X - U.S. English

That is with no upgrades....it must have been a glitch on Apple's website. Either that, or a sinister plot by Steve to make us all go crazy!

Just curious... It's a shame that Steve says "The New iMac?s will be in Stores in two weeks..."
Judging by the current ship time he should have said "in stores in two months"
Look on the bright side - by the looks of things, they'll come with 10.2 pre-installed!
nice call
