New Powermac's and the second bay. Optical? Front Ports?

Posted:
in Current Mac Hardware edited January 2014
Ok, I ordered my new Powermac last week and have lately been searching for another optical drive to go in the second bay. I've been looking at different drives (CDR and DVD) to see what will be compatible. From my previous sales knowledge of CDR drives, the TDK VeloCD is one of the cleanest and nicest I've known. I decided I would ask them and see if theirs worked on Macs. On the web site they don't list the internal EIDE drives as being compatible with Mac, but after emailing them I figured out that it does infact work and that they haven't listed it as working because there was never a physical drive bay to put it in. The only problem is finding your own software since it was never meant to ship for a Mac.

This raises a couple of questions to me. Based on this, does any internal optical drive work? I've been working with a 4x drive over the past 2 years, so 8x would most likely be ok to me. You gotta think though, what about adding ports to the front of the tower? I've got a USB 2.0 card that I purchased, and I could easily buy a drive bay panel and run USB from the internal port on the card.

What else can you do with that extra bay? There is obviously fans you can purchase, but I've looked at the new towers personally and they have plenty of cooling. What is everyone going to do with theirs?

I want to put a MO (Magneto-Optical) drive in the second bay.

Do you know a good MO drive that I may put there ?

I bought an 867 which comes standard without DVD-R. I would like to add one, but I have the same compatibility concerns you do, Converted.

    Any recommendations?

I once exchanged the original CD-ROM from my B&W to a Toshiba SD-M1402. It works fine, I can play DVDs from an unmodified OSX DVD-Player. Only the feature "booting from CD by pressing 'C'" doesn't work anymore. A very good source of further information is the drive compatibility database <a href="http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/"; target="_blank">XLR8yourMac</a>.

I just ordered a new Mac. I'll intend to add either my CD or the DVD drive.

The new revolutionary Yamaha 44x/24x/44x CRW-F1 is the only way to go in that second slot. It costs over $150 right now. But it can inscribe disc info on the unused portion of each CD with it's powerful inscriber capable laser.

"DiscT@2? Yamaha's exclusive DiscT@2? system burns graphics and text on any CD, eliminating the need for labels."

It can also write to the higher capacity 800 and 850 MB discs which almost all of the rest can't at all. It's super fast, writes to the CDRs in a completely new way that is inherently faster and mistakeproof.

"F1 Speeds Allow you to record a CD up to 15% faster than any other high-speed (40X+) CD recorder."

It can write to rewritables at an unprecedented 24X. It is billed as a floppy replacement because it is so fast to the rewritables. This is a MUST HAVE CDR drive that obsoletes all others to date. I am surprised that Apple hasn't made a deal with Yamaha to OEM these drives like they do with Pioneer the SuperDrives.

    Do it!

<a href="http://www.yamahamultimedia.com/"; target="_blank">http://www.yamahamultimedia.com/</a>; is the link to 8 press releases detailing all of this CDR's capabilities. It is a miracle piece of breakthrough technology. Toast supports this drive.

That sounds pretty awesome, but my question is: How do you manage the disc "tattoo-ing"? You said it's compatible with Toast, which is great, but Toast won't let you set that tattoo stuff up. It seems to me that you'd need specialized software from Yamaha to make that work, and they don't make any Mac software.

I'm considering buying this drive, but not if I can't use the tattoo feature.

If you want to know about compatibility check out <a href="http://www.xlr8yourmac.com"; target="_blank">xlr8yourmac.com</a>. It has a searchable database with this info.

Not only is the CRW-F1 NOT listed at xlr8yourmac, but my question wasn't about general compatibility. I already established that it's compatible with Toast in my last post. My question was how you implement the tattooing feature, since Yamaha doesn't make Mac software for it.

The Yamaha IDE CRW-F1 IS listed on <a href="http://www.pricewatch.com."; target="_blank">http://www.pricewatch.com.</a>; It's at the bottom of the first Storage-&gt; CD Recorders column:

"$158 EIDE 44x24x44" including shipping. ($168 CA from ID)

The Tatooing is done with graphics software that is included. They will be shipping SCSI and FireWire/USB2 external versions by the end of this month with total Macintosh solution software incuded.

Go to their site and read ALL of the press releases. <a href="http://www.yamahamultimedia.com"; target="_blank">http://www.yamahamultimedia.com</a>; you click on the jigsaw puzzle pieces to launch each press release into a separate browser window.

I don't think Yamaha was prepared for the dual internal Macs. We have to educate their PR and Marketing department that they are going to have to bundle Mac software with the IDE version as well as the external models.

I just re-read that press release on Tattooing:

"...Using DiscT@2 is easy and intuitive. Yamaha recorders featuring this new technology come with a new version of Ahead Nero that is designed to provide support for the DiscT@2 technology so that tattooing a disc can be done quickly, right after completing the data or audio recording process. In addition, Yamaha is working with all other third-party CD recording software vendors to make sure that DiscT@2 is supported through their CD recording applications..."

I'm doing the inquiry's to Roxio and Yamaha about the need for a DiscT@2 module for Mac Toast and how soon will that solution be available. Stay tuned to this thread for my next report on what they say.

Received from Yamaha PR department today,

The good news is that Roxio already supports the CRW-F1. We asked Roxio to create a special module for the DiscT@2 function and they have done so. Our CRW-F1ZDX shipping in earlyÂ*September will come bundled with Roxio Toast Lite which includes the DiscT@2 feature and soon after, Toast Platinum will support this feature as well. FYI, we have a very close relationship with Roxio and our main goal is to make sure our Macintosh users are happy and fully supported.

    Â*

As in regards to the Dual-drive Mac,Â*despite our close ties with Apple, we were not really awareÂ*of the new tower concept untilÂ*early August. We are though very interested in making our internal model the drive of choice for all Mac users upgrading to the new tower and, as a result, we are working with several people at Apple toÂ*make sure no efforts are spared. The Roxio software willÂ*support both the external and internal models as, principally, the firmware and chipsets are the same.

Next question is how do those of us who already own Toast get that new module?

Currently, I have <a href="http://www.startech.com/usbfirewire/usbhub.htm"; target="_blank">this</a>, but I'll be upgrading to <a href="http://www.koutech.com/proddetail.asp?linenumber=102"; target="_blank">this</a> as soon as I can confirm that my G4 will sleep properly with the card installed.

Hmm that looks like a good idea for my tower. Just wish I had a 5.25" drive bay where I could put <a href="http://audiomidi.com/common/cfm/product.cfm?Product_ID=1868"; target="_blank">this</a>

Front ports would be a lot better.

What are you going to do about the drive bay door? How will you keep it open?

    From Yamaha tonight:

"Roxio will be adding the DiscT@2 function into Toast Titanium in version 5.2."

No release date given. Still waiting to hear from Roxio.

    CNET just gave this drive editor's choice. See the review at <a href="http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/0-1095-404-20192504.html"; target="_blank">http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/0-1095-404-20192504.html</a>;

You could j ust remove the door or remove the spring or attach something to easily move it down.

I've never looked around for something like this and i'm seriusly considering getting it... are there any speed differences compared to the built in one ports?

I agree. That Yamaha looks good, and I know that all the other Yamahas specifically stated they are Mac compatible. I doubt you'd have a problem, considering thousands of people including myself are using off-the-shelf Lite-On burners that say nothing about Mac compatibility. Also, check out cdrinfo.com and they have a review of the drive on there. You can get them in black, probably a little bit more expensive granted. If not, I'd try looking for a black Lite-On 48x, my 24x is a great drive and I've had no problems thus far using it. They have Bus-Link & Digital Research Technologies drives at any Best Buy, and those contain Lite-On mechanisms.

VERY nice, thanks for the info, all. I'll probably wait till Toast 5.2 is out, then get the Yamaha burner. What a perfect solution - Superdrive in the top, CRW-F1 in the bottom.

BE careful with Yamaha Burners..My Dorm Parent at school got an external 16x8x40 firewire burner by yamaha **For his titanium notebook ** and it lacks burnproof, and can't burn audio any faster than 8x...and it isn't very reliable.

    just FYI

however this burner WAS only 150 bucks...so I guess you get what you pay for.
