Graphics Card Advice

I'm going to be purchasing a new Dual GHz machine in the near future (next few weeks) - and my biggest question about making the order is what graphics card to buy... I will be doing gaming on the machine, no question about it, so I'll need a card that will at least play the most recent games (WC3 for instance - and in particular) on high-quality video settings at very good framerates. I'd like to cut costs as much as possible, but I'm not sure that the GeForce 4MX is up to the task, and I'm apprehensive about uprading to the GeForce 4Ti because of the cost/value ratio.

The question that I'm asking is this: what are people's impressions with the Radeon 9000 (the standard card for the dual GHz machine) vs. the MX and the Ti, and is there somewhere that I can see performance tests between the cards on a machine similar to the new Dual GHz PowerMac?

Thanks for the input!

<a href="http://www.barefeats.com"; target="_blank">BareFeats</a> has a bunch of tests that compare these exact cards. However, avoid reading comments/conclutions, or at least not take their words as facts!

If I were you (and actually I am in your exact situation), I'd go with the RADEON9000PRO.

The GeForce4MX is too crippled (slow/primitive GPU, too little onboard RAM) and the GeForce 4Ti is simply too expensive IMHO

If you end up finding out that the RADEON isn't enough for your demands, get the RADEON 9700 PRO when it's out. I will kick GF4Ti ass, and will be worth it even when considering it's pretty phat price-tag.

Thanks for the advice - it's exaclty what I was looking for! It seems to me that people think that the 9000 is a pretty decent card, so hopefully it should hold me over for a while...

On a side note - I was at my local CompUSA (the only Mac retailer around here in the sticks <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" /> ) today, and a took a gander at the new PowerMacs... <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

Question next is, when will the 9700 be out and when will the next niVidia card be out?

Not too sure on the Radeon 9700, I thought it's supposed to be out very soon on the PC side, so whatever that's worth. As far as the next-gen Nvidia (NV30 I believe), Anandtech seems to think it'll be out sometime in December.

A few PC Makers started to configure machines with the new ATI 9700 Cards along with the 2.8GHz P4 when they were announced (about a week or so now). So, I am assuming that it shouldn't be long before there is a Mac version.
