  • Lossless streaming option for Apple Music may launch within weeks

Steve Jobs never wanted lossless. He and Neil Young had a meeting about that very thing before there ever was an iTunes Store let alone streaming. So as Neil’s Pono player and music store were about to start making money, Apple bought their mastering facility and shut it down. Because Steve was an asshole.

    I’ll stick with Qobuz.
The iTunes Store opened in 2003.

    Jobs died in 2011.

    Pomo launched in 2015.

Pomo hardware was too expensive for mainstream consumption.

Pomo's content partner, Omnifone, was bankrupt when Apple bought them in 2016.

You obviously have a casual relationship with reality.

    Question for TV owners:

Does TV have some kind of "always on" mode that can be used to let the TV on your TV be an information display, slide show, or anything like that?

Yes, all the above. You can set TV to "never" turn off. And though the Photos and Computer apps are built in for streaming and slideshows, you might have to use an app like VLC for some DLNA content.

  • Apple Stores will soon start updating iPhones while still in the sealed retail box

Seems like that could cause heat concerns, and if done a few times, low battery levels. Pretty nifty though.
yeah, also seems like a major security hole. But what I know...  🤔

  • Apple will crush the DoJ in court if Garland sticks with outdated arguments

"There is no legal requirement, anywhere, that Apple needs to make applications to assist with third-party integrations of smartwatches. This is up to the integrators. And, the key integrators, Google and Samsung, have chosen to not do so for reasons only known to themselves."

This is the thing. Why should Apple be forced to make an inferior, less secure product just so it's compatible with Android, or any other app or OS? They shouldn't.

As the article says this whole case against Apple seems poorly thought out, and not based on facts nor law, but jealously and envy. It appears to me the DOJ has seen the EU dubiously scrape a couple billion off of Apple, and it wants some of those sweet. sweet Apple profits too.

What a waste of time, resources, and tax payer money.

  • Intel wants to manufacture Apple Silicon

    I got this Tim...

Intel, the short answer is "no."

The long answer is, "Hellllllll No!"

One of the problems with using your tiny little expensive space heaters was you couldn't keep on schedule. Your OWN schedule. Why should we trust you to stay on our schedule with our more advanced and efficient chips, especially when they're competing against your tiny little obsolete space heaters?

    No thanks.

  • Apple insists 8GB unified memory equals 16GB regular RAM

So, after all the lovely thoughtful comments here …

I’ll add that my personal experience bears this out. My M1 Max MBP 32Gb absolutely kept up with the Alienware R12 i7 64Gb. The only difference between the two was the graphics card (NVIDIA) performance and the ability to ramp up the processor cycles (and sound like a hair dryer).

I pushed the limits of both machines in video encoding and streaming.

    Your mileage may vary.
Same here. I went from 128GB on an 2019 iMac to 32GB on a Mac Studio. I've been skeptical about getting by with only 32GB, but last week I transcoded a 2 hour 4K video while streaming Apple Music and local photos to two sources, and using Pixelmator Pro and Safari... and the RAM barely scratched 24GB.

So so far RAM hasn't been an issue for me. But as Apple adds more features to MacOS I don't see anyway how 8GB would be enough to be productive as these computers age.

Now, can we talk about Apple's abusive SSD pricing?   :|

  • Apple bills Epic Games $73 million in legal costs

Epic already doesn't make any money.  I wonder where they'll get it.

Watch Unreal Engine licensing change to something more like Unity tried to do.
They'll just use the money they'll get from winning the case against Google. It's basically Monopoly money... pun slightly intended.

  • Apple forgot it's already released iPadOS 17.4.1

Well ya know, we all go through it. Apple's almost 50 now, and we all start forgetting things as we get older... :|

  • Apple launches Apple Music Classical app

A dedicated TVOS app would be a nice tip of the hat - I don’t necessarily want to be tethered to AirPlay.
And there’s my issue with this: Apple TV is limited to 48khz for some reason. I can’t even stream files from my computer to the Apple TV  on my sound system at a native resolution above 48khz, which is an really disappointing because there is no limitation of an internal DAC, and I can do so on my universal disc player released 7 years ago! All the Apple TV needs to do is pass the audio to my preamp.

Either Apple needs to enable Apple TV to play  hi-res above 48khz via a software update, or release a third Apple TV in 3 years for people who actually can hear the difference between 48khz and 98khz (i.e. people with a halfway decent sound system).
I’ve been wishing for a while that they would restore the optical output that used to be included with Apple TV, which would also make it a lot easier to connect your Apple TV to an external DAC or other stereo components that don’t have HDMI. Almost no DACs take HDMI input, and if you invest big money on one of the few that does, it will start to be obsolete as soon as they update the HDMI spec, whereas optical digital signals don’t run that risk in the same way. If you want to use a high-end DAC from 10+ years ago with HDMI, it won’t pass through a 4K signal or HDR. I know you can solve this problem with a splitter or extractor, but it’s still inelegant and there aren’t a lot of great options there either.

The fact that Apple is doubling down on hi-res audio does seem like generally a good indicator that they care about this stuff, and maybe they will also find a way to extend AirPlay to support higher bit rates, especially if people have to run the app on their iPhones.
The dropping of the digital optical jack probably had more to do with labels wanting to phase them out for copyright protection concerns/paranoia. And lack of higher resolution options on Apple Music may be due to bandwidth and server limitations, BUT my iphone can store and play store and play up to 192khz. We shouldn’t have to stream audio through our iphones and a USB connection to get hi-res music from our phones or macs, when we’ve already invested in an Apple TV (or two…) to stream music directly.
