IAC CEO says Apple is 'worse' than Google, likely the next antitrust target
Xed said:Forced? Does anyone here feel forced? I'm aware of the options but I choose to use several of Apple products and services, as well as choose NOT to use most of the products and services they offer because they don't fit my needs.
...ehhh...
“Forced” only by the fact that I hate Apple and their products much less than I hate everything else that’s claimed as an alternative. There’s not much else beyond Microsoft. Google, and the user-hostile chaos of Open Source “solutions”, which aren’t appropriate for my needs, even if I didn’t find the user experience awful.
It would be nice if the computer industry wasn’t constantly competing to see who can have the worst products and services, while trying to keep people believing that “this is just how it is and has to be”. I miss the Apple I didn’t feel impotent rage toward. Those were good days. But what are ya gonna do... -
A rollable iPad won't break at the hinge, and Apple keeps working on one
DAalseth said:YES. I first saw something along these lines on the series Earth: Final Conflict and thought then it was an ideal solution. No single line that gets all the stress, spread it out with a small amount of bending across the whole screen.
I still think it won’t happen, though. Impractical. Deformation causes material stress. Repeat deformation stress causes breakage. -
Trump says SoftBank to invest $50B in US, hopes to create 50,000 jobs
sdw2001 said:The_Martini_Cat said:Wow, a million dollars per job, that's like 100 grand a year salary for ten years. I'm not a bit skeptical.
Yes, your sarcasm--and skepticism of politicians is warranted. But Trump has already shown he's going to do what he says. He's accomplished more in 1 month as PEOTUS than Obama has in 8 years actually being in office. Trump's message is that the US is open for business. He's going to have businesses and capital fighting to get here. Just watch.
What Trump has "accomplished" is setting the stage for worse fascism than the USA has had thus far. And you celebrate. -
Executive leading HealthKit, other software platforms leaves Apple
GeorgeBMac said:I seriously doubt that privacy had any bearing on her leaving.
The ultra slow state of development of the capabilities of the Apple Watch probably had a lot more to do with it.
Apple initially marketed the watch with a focus on health - even pointing it as a tribute to Steve Jobs and the lessons they experienced from his illness. But, when they failed to develop those capabilities, they switched to marketing it as a fashion accessory and tech trinket.
Opening the watch to Nike and opening the watch's metrics to fitness apps was a good, but tentative, step towards making the watch a first class, top of the line fitness tracker. But, so far, all they've done is open the door -- it's still a mediocre fitness tracker and most serious athletes do not even consider it.
And, as far as a health monitor/tracker, those capabilities have not even begun to be tapped. The only health parameters it is capable of is heart rate and, not only are there many other cheaper heart rate trackers out there, but Cleveland Clinic tests showed that, at 90% accuracy it could not be relied on from a medical perspective.
So, to date, the Apple watch:
-- Fulfilled its role as a fashion / tech accessory
-- Opened the door to being a high quality fitness tracker
-- Has totally failed as a health tracker
I can hear Steve Jobs calling: "This is crap. Fix It!"
.... Perhaps its time for some fresh blood with new ideas and initiatives?
p.s. Tim Cook has his name on this and has devoted a lot of his personal time and reputation to it. I have to believe that he is not happy that the watch has neither, so far, lived up to its potential nor his expectations. I think I can hear even Tim Cook saying: "This is crap. Fix It!" -
Apple investigated, took action against alleged sexism at Cupertino headquarters

SJWS are among the weakest and most pathetic breed of humans to have ever existed.
SJWS should never be hired in the first place, if one is looking for good and productive employees that will actually excel at their jobs.
PS- Ok, I just read that chat log. What the fuck? The guy posted some song lyrics , this woman then freaked out and lectured him about feeling unsafe. He apologized profusely multiple times, and the next day she emails cook basically claiming that her life is in danger. She's given a month off, comes back, and acts like a victim again. Sorry, but all signs point to this person just having some vindictive complex, wanting to cause trouble and get people fired, and was in no way in a "toxic" environment. She made a fucking mountain out of a mole hill, needed a month to "recover" from the "trauma" of seeing some lyrics to a popular song, then just kept milking it when she got back. THAT is what creates a toxic environment, with everyone else on the team being terrified that they're gonna get if they breathe or look at her the wrong way, or post some meme.
Yep. From those emails this definitely sounds like someone to CREATES a toxic environment, and lowers the morale of everyone around them. Her escalation was not needed, since the guy apologized and promised to never do it again, even thought he in no way, shape, or form attacked her directly or indirectly. But, she kept going with her perceived slight wanting to harm everyone around her.I seriously can’t tell if this article is satire. The woman “Danielle” sounds like a complete narcissist who absolutely refuses to accept a sincere apology multiple times, climbs leaps and bounds above the chain of command to the CEO of the company, gets a month paid leave, and comes back expecting what exactly? Did she want the whole department fired, or just to be appointed to head of the department on her return?
This is not a toxic work environment, but I do believe she is a toxic employee that would likely spread her BS grievances to anyone within earshot. I hope they fire her, but in our society she will probably get millions in a settlement as the result of her behavior.
Barring people from the workplace because they have a PTSD trigger that causes panic isn't the solution (unless they're a risk of harm; that's probably not the case here). The immediate solution is to work with all parties involved in the situation and attempt to de-escalate everyone's emotions. The guys in the chat did apologize, but it was too late for the woman's PTSD. It's a difficult situation to be in, but the real villain here is the person who raped her, leading to her PTSD. The long term solution is for men to stop raping and assaulting women, our culture to stop being so pre-emptively hostile to each other (Internet culture seems to promote this behavior, as we can see with our special little napalm snowflake geek bros on this forum), and for our country to stop sending our soldiers to fight non-defensive wars.

Much of Apple's recovered e-waste likely legally mandated and not Apple-made
Well, that explains all the steel. I was wondering. And now I know. A bit disappointing. In fact, this whole "buying credits" thing is a bunch of BS, just as it is with buying "renewable energy credits". It's all just more opportunism finding ways of using the letter of the law/regulations/initiatives to defeat the spirit of them. -
Danish court rules Apple not allowed to dole out refurb iPhones for service swaps
Good. There's no telling what's potentially wrong with a refurb that's been missed and when you paid for a new device, you should not be given a not-new in exchange after finding out your brand new device has a defect.
This should be standard, everywhere, for all "replacement as warranty service" situations. If you start with a new product that has a defect, you should end up with a new product without defect as warranty protection against defect.
For mobile devices and laptops/desktops.
No, I don't think it should be mandated for repair instigated by damage. Give the customer an option between actual repair or replacement with refurb. Oh wait, Apple doesn't have the will to do component level repair even though we know it's possible... -

Dead body found at Apple's Infinite Loop headquarters [ux3]
