How Apple iCloud Private Relay works
The only question why would you want your VPN traffic to run through Apple’s relay service as they suggest, it’s just another layer of latency you have to deal with,I’m assuming it keeps your ISP from spying on you as well, since it has secure encryption connection between safari and the websites your visiting. The ISP should only see random data going to the Apple relay server. -
After a VR-free year from Apple, VR headsets deemed "the biggest loser" of 2016
muadibe said:Except for a few niche groups including gaming, design, engineering and medicine, VR won't become a 'thing' until it's at StarTrek Holodeck level.I agree, when everyone at once can experience the same thing and see everyone else's reaction at once it will be successful.
ignomini said:VR has the same inherent issue as stereo photography, it's a one person at a a time experience. This makes it not a group social thing, but more of a mommy's basement loner product. Have a look at the ads currently running. One person is wearing the headset, and everyone else is reacting to that persons reactions. Once the new wears off, the reactions are done. Beyond that, a group of people hate waiting around for their turn. I see the same phenomenon when showing stereo photos. The person with the viewer may be enthralled, but everyone else is waiting for their turn. It grows old very quickly. Choose your reason why, but Mr Dilger is correct. VR may carve out a niche, but it will be in either technical disciplines, or the basement.

Flawed 3rd-party chargers reportedly culprit in Apple's China iPhone 6 investigation
lkrupp said:Yep. We already knew this instinctively. Apple should modify their warranty to say use of an unapproved third party charger voids the warranty. Walk into any Walgreens and you’ll see a big pile of multi-colored, Chiclet style chargers and cables for $1.99 at the check out counter.US law does not allow this, the only way to void a warranty, Apple would have to prove the third party device is the actual cause of the failure which is not all that easy. It is like the car companies tell you putting third party brake pads or gasoline or oil voids the warranty of the car, legally they are not allowed. In this case it is most likely not the actual charger but the cable and the chip in the cable. I use all kinds third party charges without an issue, the only time I have seen an issue is with third part cables. Amaizon sells their own branded cable and I have never seen any issue with them but they are certified. But other cheap cable have all kinds of issues like not fully charging the phone.
A device which is dumb like a charger which just provide powers should not be the issue, there is more to this than the power source.

Biker burned by broken iPhone, seeks to raise battery danger awareness
eightzero said:Cue the blame the victim posts in 3...2...1...
Yes because you can not fix stupid. Every day I see and talk to people who lack very basic common sense and these are not Teenagers who I expect that from. I surprised how often I hear the words "I did not expect that to happen" or "I did not think that would happen" and when I ask what did you think would happen, you get the blank steer or get the "not that" -
Liquid ingress warning in iOS 10 beta protects iPhone against water damage
nobodyy said:cnocbui said:How does this offer any 'protection'?
Your iPhone is lying at the bottom of the toilet and you can see the warning come up on the screen through the 'water' - how does that protect the phone which may well be about to die?
The iOS device is already doing this when you insert a lightning connector, now there is just a prompt for it - Lightning already checks for shorts on pins during insertion. There isn't some sort of water censor hidden in there.
So for realistic example: if you go running in the rain, get home, and then plug your moist phone in, you don't fry the device, cable, or charge block.
Most likely a precursor for water tight phone!
