Why you want a macOS home server, and how to get one going
I’ve done Windows Server, mac Server, Linux Server, FreeNAS Server, Rockstor Server and Synology Server over about 15 years.
i would say the best overall is Synology by far. You can google Xpenology which is a bootloader to use Synology OS (Synology DSM) on your own hardware. Their real hardware is great too, haven’t had any issues.
Synology has BTRFS running over mdadm RAID and it’s highly integrated. You can also install virtual machines which is great too. It has so many plugins too and also docker, you can run anything on these things.
I recommend this over FreeNAS because that uses ZFS and you can’t add single drives to expand a RAID 5/6 which most people find out too late.
Rockstor uses BTRFS for the filesystem and RAID and it’s not stable yet.
Windows, Mac and Linux OS’s still require logging into and managaing them, maintaining them etc They are not designed to be headless, don’t have reporting via email or notifications for system issues either, I would avoid them unless you absolutely need their functionality. -
Apple rolls out improved Apple Maps for Australia
tnet-primary said:How ironic…given that Australians aren’t allowed the leave their houses. Yuck yuck 😂
Also I wouldn’t mock a system that works. Australia has had 60 deaths/1M pop as opposed to other developed countries like USA which has 2200 deaths/1M pop. -
Apple, Huawei both using 7nm TSMC processors, beating out Qualcomm and Samsung
tjwolf said:"HiSilicon advised it was planning to spend a minimum of $300 million on a system-on-chip design using 7-nanometer technology, illustrating the potentially high costs involved in working at that level." I have no idea what the author is talking about here. Why would it cost any more to *design* at 7nm than at 10nm? I'm pretty sure the high costs/complexity is mostly on the manufacturing side. -
Apple's MacBook butterfly switch keyboards target of second class action complaint
I’ve had this MacBook since launch day and the keyboard does get debris stuck under the keys easily but it hasn’t failed on me.
I’ve had to spray compressed air under some keys two times only.
However I don’t like the key travel, it’s really shallow. This needs to be addressed.
I don’t know how they can fix the issue with debris screwing the keys up.
A good outcome for me would be if Apple setup up a replacement program for the keyboard affected models and an updated problem free keyboard in future models.
It would be could if existing models could be retrofitted with a V2 keyboard if possible.
I think the issue is blown out of proportion however it is a real issue and needs to be addressed by Apple.
