Apple TV+ Dolby Vision HDR streams failing for some viewers
This has been going on for a few weeks now, first with episodes 6, now with the whole series (all but Dickinson)
The episodes are actually in Dolby Vision (which you can check with the Playback HUD, which you can activate via Xcode), but make my Dolby Vision TV switch to HDR.
If I disable "Match Dynamic Range" they play beautifully in Dolby Vision, just as they should.
I read somewhere that some older Dolby Vision TVs had big issues when playing these Apple TV+ shows - that might be why Apple forced the shows ro display in HDR10 instead of Dolby Vision via Apple TV 4K.
The shows still appear as Dolby Vision on my iPad mini. -

Intel has a faster processor than M2 Max, but at what cost?
Thx.
It would be nice to change the title from "Intel has a faster processor than M2 Max, but at what cost?" to "Intel has a faster laptop processor than M2 Max, but at what cost?"
Intel also makes processor for desktops ...and servers. I have no doubt that many of them are faster than M2 Max.
I do question the relevance of the benchmarks, in particular regarding the optimization (or lack thereof) of apps for Apple Silicon, and in particular the use or not of dedicated silicon on Apple Silicon.
Apple Silicon has many dedicated units (such as the neural engine, ProRes or HEVC encoders/decoders) and optimization for those is not just a question of compling for Apple Silicon.
For example, I am pretty sure that Final Cut Pro is way faster than Premiere Pro on Apple Silicon, because it uses the dedicated ProRes/HEVC encoders/decoders on Apple's chips.
Similarly, I only use Apple Compressor for HEVC exports - it uses VideoToolbox and all the available silicon and that makes a big difference.
So, adding a comparison with similar tasks made on Apple software (or software used with all Apple Silicon optimizations) would add a lot of context to these benchmarks.

Apple TV+ review: Catching up with full seasons of Apple's original shows
I have to disagree about Ted Lasso - it is a phenomenal show!
You have to go through the first 3 episodes which rely mainly on the differences between American football and soccer. After this, it is funny, optimistic, very smart and good-hearted. I have never seen anything remotely approaching it - a real very good surprise. And, by the way, very far from the non-risky approach of Netflix - I don't think Netflix could produce a show like Ted Lasso. -

Apple's fifth round of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, macOS 15.1 developer betas have arrived
2 HomePod minis bricked after trying to install software 18.1 beta 5.
Cannot restore them - the light goes white, then red, then vanishes instead of continuing with 3 audio beeps - they don't even show up as USB devices in System Info on my Mac.
Had 18.1 beta on my HomePod minis because I updated to 18.0 a few days early (because travel) and mistakenly validated updating to the previous 18.1 beta.
Update - I could restore them to software 18.0 using Apple Configurator. -
Apple's biggest innovation of the last 25 years isn't the iPhone
I agree with the author.
The big enabler of later Apple innovations was the introduction of the easiness of development into its platforms.
That started with Mac OS X (and its public beta).
It was clear to me at that stage (not difficult for it to be, since Jobs and Apple tirelessly emphasized it and delivered the tools that made it material) that Apple's strength was the easiness and speed with which quality apps could be developed.
This speed of development, coupled with solidity, has given Apple an exponential advantage over the years. It has enabled the speed and width of development of Apple platforms.
I am glad that Daniel gets it and wrote this article. -
