  • Review: Apple's Late-2016 MacBook Pro without Touch Bar

Expected by whom? Also, isn't another way of looking at it people will buy MacBook Air because these are priced high.
The price difference between MBA and the Retina Macbook is just $300. Do these people buy an obsolete smartphone for $300 less? Absolutely not.

Those are buyers who still keep an obsolete product in the inventory. Otherwise Apple would prefer to retire a product as soon as it releases a new one, like any other big players of all industries.

The price is high because people still buy the obsolete Macbook Air. When Macbook Air is retired, it is expected that all products shift to a lower price slot: Retina Macbook: $1000, 13" MBP without the Touch Bar reviewed here: $1300 and so on...

Apple's lack of "courage" (or their intention to maximize profits during the holiday shopping season) coupled with irrational buyer behavior still keep the obsolete Macbook Air in the inventory and cause inflated prices.
