President Obama urges prudence from both sides of encryption debate, warns against 'absolutist' pos
The issue no politician seems to understand is that the reason there is no middle ground is that this is a technical discussion and there is a single definitive answer to this debate. A backdoor will put us all in danger, period! Look, I understand the point of view of law enforcement agencies. I do not fear them. If there was a technical solution that would allow cops to look at my phone's content with a warrant, while protecting me from online hackers, I would support it. The issue is that there isn't and I do not want hackers from Russia or the Ukraine to be able to hijack my phone remotely or see iPhone theft increase again because shady shops can easily unlock stolen phones. -

Editorial: Apple survived 2016's onslaught of fake news and failed competitors
I don't like to bash journalists, but I think they deserve this hit piece. The problem is that the press needs engaged readers who come back every day to read their articles to sustain their business. With only two (or three) keynotes per year, Apple doesn't provide them with enough material to support their business. So, what do they do, they hype product and initiatives that don't have a chance in the marketplace. One example is Microsoft's Surface, an overpriced, clearly underpowered machine hailed as the next big thing in PCs. The problem is that with each article hyping a product that eventually flops, these journalists are losing their only asset, their credibility. I hope they get to read this article and that they analyze how they can improve in 2017. -
Apple updates iWork apps with macOS Ventura & iPadOS 16 features
I am fluent with MS Office and my employer pays for a corporate license. Therefore, my decision to use Apple’s software instead of MS’s has nothing to do with cost. Keynote is simply vastly superior to PowerPoint. I recognize that Excel is faster and offers more functionality than Numbers but for me, Apple’s spreadsheet software layout flexibility is way more important when looking at the data. I don’t use much word processors these days but I also prefer Pages mainly because how text selection works in Word.Overall I am very happy with Keynote, Numbers and Pages and graceful to Apple for not having to use MS Office on my Mac. -

Ireland gearing up escrow fund, government supervision for $15.2B tax payment from Apple
This seems extremely premature... Even if Ireland collects the money, any EU country that feels lost taxes to Ireland will be able to reclaim that money from Ireland and trust me, they will. As a result, even if Apple loses their appeal, which is not certain at this point given the verdict handled by French courts in favor of Google against the French government, that money is not staying in Ireland.
