  • Academy squeezing out Apple TV+ movies with new Oscar rules

I couldn't care less what self-congratulating award ceremonies do to restrict eligibility. I'm going to watch what interests me.

What chaps my hide is when "patriot" factions attempt to restrict my right to vote. Or my eligibility to vote by mail ballot.
I agree, I think voting should be decided by whichever side cheats the best.  That apartment complex down the street that has four floors has magically become a 30 floor complex and all of those additional floor have already registered with my preferred party and are queued up to vote for my chosen candidate.

  • FCC ordered to take public feedback on net neutrality repeal

    davgreg said:
Mr. Pai came to the FCC from Verizon and has been on a mission to give the telecom/ISP lobby their wish list starting with net neutrality. He is not your friend regardless of your political viewpoint.

Simply stated, net neutrality is equal access for both those who provide content- like Apple Insider - and consumers who view it. By the way, both the providers and consumers already pay ISPs for internet access.

A free and open internet needs for there to be equal access to the whole internet both to serve for a fair commercial market and for an open exchange of ideas among the public. The huge companies we all know like Amazon, Google, Facebook, Netflix and such were able to become what they are in part because of an online environment where your content and service was the determining factor in your success- not a rigged internet where their sites were not hobbled by a second or third tier online connection.

There is also a reasonable concern about a fair an open internet that allows for the free exchange of ideas. Despite the flame wars that get outsized attention, most online commenters are reasonable and not offensive.

Landline ISPs are a natural monopoly due to the expense and complexity of the build out and upkeep of the connections. Very few people have a choice regarding broadband landline internet connections. Wireless is not really a competition due to the low data caps imposed upon wireless networks and the common problems with congestion. As such, there is a compelling need fro some level of government oversight to make sure ISPs to not abuse their market position.
As long as you're happy with an Internet that only provides Apple Insider-like solutions for the next 50 years then net neutrality would be great.  But, if you'd like to see companies innovate and roll out new solutions that require new infrastructure, then tough luck.  If telecom providers want to roll out expensive switches and big pipes to support some new 16k video with interactive VR that requires super high bandwidth, shouldn't they be able to charge more for that lane of the highway?  Or if you think that should be shared by all, then isn't the shared cost unfairly high for those that don't want that product?
Landlines aren't a natural monopoly...they are only a monopoly because the local governments grant them.
Free market competition works everywhere except where government touches it.
"Free exchange of ideas" ?  How does that work in a regulated environment?  Do you  really want someone from an unelected government bureaucracy determining what is ok and what's not?
I'm 100% on board with regulation or even socialism as long as I get to be the person in charge.

  • Apple is the world's biggest company at $3 trillion -- again

    Mondain said:
$3T is quite an obscene amount of money. This is equivalent to the GDP of all Latin American countries.

Eventually, we must draw a line between what one has and how much it is deserved.
Deserved?  Decided by you?  Apple didn’t decide the stock price, millions of the rest of us did.

  • Apple AI chief refers to iOS 17 Safari search feature in Google antitrust testimony

Yeah, this is a totally ridiculous charge. It's not Google's fault that consumers are refusing to change search engines. No one seems to care that in most communities, there is only one choice for Cable TV. Sure, they can switch to Satellite TV or Online Streaming, but if they have their heart set on Cable, there is only one option available. That Versus anyone can switch to any number of search engines they want. I don't get it.
Seriously?  Everybody has complained for 50 years about lack of cable choice.

  • Apple reduces raises given to retail employees after weak iPhone quarter

Oh FFS. Who the heck is running Apple's retail business? The ghost of Jack Welch? This is an idiotic, myopic, 19th century management approach that has guaranteed long term negative return.

Almost nobody goes to an Apple Store not already knowing what they are going to buy. iPhones aren't an impulse buy as is gum at the grocery store checkout line. Deirdre and every other manager between retail and VP takes similar percentage cuts to raises.

    https://www.apple.com/leadership/deirdre-obrien/

At what point did Deirdre sell her soul for a 1.2% return on her stock options? She should already be out on her can for her moronic, ham-fisted approach to store unions. When Microsoft does a better job with its employees, you know something is screwed up.

Sorry but most companies give out raises based on sales. Does it suck, yes, but it's what most companies do. Where I works thats how it's done too. If the company has a good year you get a better raise and bonus. If not then well its flat.
Actually bonuses are based on one time events and raises are awarded based on improved experience and performance over time.  So a good year merits a bonus and a bad year gets reduced or no bonus.  More experience, increased skills, etc = raise.  In your scenario, if raises are based on a good year, then a bad year should result in decreased salary. And that is highly unlikely.

  • NBCUniversal ad exec Linda Yaccarino will be the new Twitter CEO

    cia said:
So what's the over/under on how long she lasts?  I figure maybe 6 months.  Elon will either drive her away quickly with his micro-management or she's go full red pill and drive the company into the ground just as fast as if he was running it alone.

Maybe she should shadow Gwynne Shotwell over at SpaceX for a few months first to learn how to deal with Elon.  Shotwell is an amazing leader over there, she does an amazing job running SpaceX and keeping Elon in check.
So - your point is Elon made a bad pick and then you used another Musk company example as how to do it right?
  • Toyota chooses Ford over Apple, will eschew CarPlay in favor of SmartDeviceLink

And this is why Apple will make a car.  They tried to work with manufactures and got frustrated.  Just like they tried to work with Motorola and other phone companies.  But just like the bastardized Motorola Rockr, cars will continue to have crappy interfaces...and soon there will be a game changer.
  • How Donald Trump's election as U.S. President could affect Apple

Ugh...I had to stop following Dilger on Twitter because of his political rants.  He does a pretty good Apple analysis, but it baffles me how someone can can support a free market company and still be a blatant socialist.  Just another product of the socialist brainwashing in schools these days.  But I guess I can thank the Chicken Little sky-is-falling knuckleheads like him that made it a profitable day on wall street for me.  AAPL November 11 call strike price 108 bought for 1.50 this morning, sold for 3.00 at lunch time...100k in about 5 hours.
