  • Apple's iOS 18 to streamline task management with unified events and reminders

I would suggest those that seek integration without the costly Fantastical subscription, check out Calendar 365 II. The menubar calendar and iPhone app are particularly effective and aesthetically balanced.

  • macOS 15 will get a big AI boost: what to expect at WWDC 2024

I would prefer it if Apple's priority with MacOS was fixing the numerous bugs in Finder that have been present for years, providing auto-sizing of columns (since they've nobbled every third-party app that enabled it in the last 20 years), and enabling system-wide font management that hides the numerous bloody fonts that are of no use and clog-up font menus.

Add to that a means to separate and label bookmarks in drop-downs, and allow white-listing of cookies (Safari), and organise genres in a user-defined order and stop attaching unconnected artwork to playlists (Music).

  • macOS Sequoia beta review: yet again small but welcome changes

I would be willing to pay for the OS if they'd just fix the bugs in Finder that send me back to the root-level every time I delete an item in column-view, or provide auto-resizing of columns in column-view, or allow me to hide all unwanted fonts in font-menus.

No new features please, just fix the bloody bugs.

  • Apple acquires the team behind Pixelmator Pro

Pixelmator Pro is one of my favourite editing apps, but it's proprietary file-format and unmanaged sidecar files, together with no adequate file manager independent of Photos means it still cannot complete with Adobe. If Apple were to acquire GraphicConverter for its Browser features then they would have the basis for a industry-leading solution.

Unfortunately, based on Photos and the push for Apple Intelligence, Apple will likely focus on the wrong features and it will be their way or the highway. They'll decide as always, they know better than the user. There is no point in all the AI stuff that Photos incorporates when its automated Collections chop the heads and feet off in portrait format images.

Pixelmator Pro and Photomator have had solid updates at regular periods, Apple updates its apps at a glacial pace. Sadly, I can see another great app getting destroyed.

Auto-resizing of columns in column view is a feature (or in this case, the lack of a feature), not a bug.

If filenames displayed in column-view are routinely truncated to the extent that similar files are indistinguishable without having to adjust column-width, then I consider that a bug. The fact that there are shortcuts to slightly relieve the monotony of having to constantly adjust column-width manually is not a solution.

I viewed the Youtube links and as expected there is nothing new there, the issue remains unfixed. TotalFinder and XFinder both provided a solution to using column-view productively, but were ultimately taken-out by SIP. Pathfinder and Forklift provide this functionality for a reason, but both are standalone file browsers so not an ideal fix. But then, I know you know this, so thanks for nothing.

  • Canva's Affinity deal will shake the Adobe status quo

Adobe Creative Cloud is a relative bargain if one is working professionally, on a full-time basis. However, what happens if one's employment is paused or reduced, either by market forces, family commitments or chronic health issues. In these situations, CC is immediately expensive and yet without it one loses access to much of their work as well as the ability to maintain and update their skill-set should circumstances improve.

Furthermore, it used to be possible to work across different disciplines but with each now subject to subscription-pricing it is almost impossible to ...for example, I spent years invested in Cinema 4D but it was not my core speciality and now it's impossible to sustain that subscription alongside Adobe CC and others.

It is fine incentivising students to use certain tools, but with an uncertain job market, globally, how many of them can afford to maintain the software between graduating and finding the roles for which they studied.

I believe that these developers need to rethink their strategies to serve real-world employment circumstances as they evolve throughout one's lifecycle.

Am I the only one who is absolutely ecstatic about finally being able to label actual folders with color rather than just having a dumb dot? Only took them more than 20 years to bring this back!
Custom iconography has been available from 3rd party stuff for a long time.
BUT, custom icons were not recognised across devices. Using them in iCloud Drive to aid organisation worked on MacOS but not iPadOS, and the latter could not 'Group by Tags' ...this should be a vast improvement.

  • macOS Sequoia review: the first macOS with more potential than new features

Queue the fanfare and f'ck the fundamentals.

Will Apple have fixed the Finder yet ...no of course not. It's not productive when every time I delete an item in column-view the view resets to the root-level, or that I have to manually resize columns since SIP killed third-party solutions.

Will Apple have fixed Fonts yet ...no of course not. It's not helpful to clutter font-menus with fonts I don't use, and illegible previews.

Will Apple have fixed Photos yet ...no of course not. It's not smart to assemble Memories or Collections then cut-off heads and feet.

    And on, and on.

  • Apple prepares iOS 19, macOS 16 'Solarium' UI overhaul for WWDC

Apple can´t afford to continue with their tiny uprades from WWDC to WWDC.

WWDC 2024 was a disaster after Apple has failed to deliver what Apple promised.

Google I/O was an "All or nothing" event with survival instinct to overcome risk of their existence. Google made a great job with I/O.
Open AI steps up with Jony Ive to open a new chapter.

After those revolutionary steps from others, people clearly expect from Apple to responde with similar steps.

In Apple’s defense, they e kind of perfected everything except their nascent ai. Hard to make massive shifts when you’re already doing it right.

How Google has stayed afloat is a mystery considering its constant throwaway projects and throw things against the wall to see if they stick approach. It makes sense they fully bore in on what stuck. Bevause they do t have much in the way of great things outside of the search engine snd the entrenched Gmail.

Open ai HAS to do something. Competitors are getting way better and closing in. They need a differentiator. Hiring Ive is a Hail Mary shot. The amount of money going into that move is quite insane. Will see how it turns out. So far the only guarantee is jony just got rven more filthy rich. Lol.

Apple is in refining mode as they figure out revolutions.
"kind of perfected everything" ...Apple have perfected nothing.

There are bugs in Finder that have existed as long as I can remember. The fundamentals such as font management go unresolved whilst they focus on fluff such as animojis. Their core apps progress at a glacial pace whilst they fiddle with distractions like Stage Manager.

I no longer look forward to WWDC announcements as I have no faith in them fixing the basics.
