  • Apple announces M1 as first Mac Apple Silicon chip

Something/s not right. They were talking about software running up to 3.8 times faster, so how could performance be equal to a two core Air chip. I just watched it, and I didn’t get that it was equivalent. We’re all missing something.

it just occurred to me what they said. I also said this on Arstechnica. It’s the four efficiency cores that are equal to the MacBook Air x86 chip, not the entire M1
This is correct. First version of the article was done at speed, and has been updated with the clarification.

  • CPSC calls Peloton Tread+ a danger to children and pets

Can we please NOT show that video keyframe image

The video shows a similar incident of a child being dragged under, but getting out and walking away. The caption text has been adjusted to advise the child in the video survived the incident.

  • Apple urges UK to rethink anti-encryption Online Safety Bill

I'm a bit confused as to why Apple would be so against this when they already have a ready-to-go service (that they voluntarily developed themselves) that would scan for such images while keeping end-to-end encryption intact.
I think the tsunami of criticism and complaints that Apple had after mentioning it the first time may have something to do with it...

  • How to visit Singapore using Apple Pay, Apple Wallet, and zero cash

How is this a story? As a UK resident it makes me laugh. I’ve used ApplePay for years and since lockdown it’s the only way I pay for everything (including in Europe). Odd that the US is so backwards on this…
As a fellow Brit, I also find it amazing how many U.S. companies cling to older payment systems instead of embracing new ones. Or, in cases such as Walmart, they try to move forward with new payment technologies but do it in such a way as to minimize their payment processing cost or to exert more control over the entire process.

If only companies thought about the stuff they're putting customers through sometimes...

  • Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 review: Heart Beats

So, am I reading the article correctly, the heart rate data can only be sent to an iOS (or presumably Android) device — i.e., these don't work in tandem with an Apple Watch in cases where you are/do want to use both? That seems like a bit of a miss.

Or did you simply not test that scenario?
While you can connect the Powerbeats Pro 2 to an Apple Watch, there's no option within watchOS to disable the heart rate monitoring on just the Apple Watch while still using the data from the earbuds.
However, this is relatively academic since it's presumed you'd be primarily using the Apple Watch for your fitness tracking needs.

  • This TikTok user got conned by fake AirPods Pro, but you don't have to get fooled

What does being a "Tiktok User" have anything to do with this? It sounds more like the author is (not so) subtly trying to throw shade on TikTok. If the user had eaten oatmeal for breakfast the article title could have read "Oatmeal Eater Got conned ..." i.e. a hidden warning not to eat oatmeal.
Nope. Not throwing shade at TikTok. The person who bought the fake earbuds recorded a video which they posted to TikTok, and which gained traction.
Also, as much as I admit oatmeal is a decent breakfast for some, I do side with more sugary stuff...

  • Compared: Dell XPS 15 and XPS 17 versus Apple's 16-inch MacBook Pro

Even though Dell themselves say that almost nobody adds their own RAM or M.2 drives after purchase, this is a good point to be explicit about.
    We’ve made the additions.

  • Larger camera bump in iPhone XS may prevent reuse of some iPhone X cases

I’m confused. I don’t see where the photo shows an X case can’t be reused. That gap is so tiny.
The photo depicts an iPhone X inside an iPhone XS case, which would cause a gap. The problem is the larger iPhone XS bump squeezing through the smaller iPhone X case cutout.

  • Inside Apple Via del Corso -- Rome's store that's also a museum

Hi there. Just to clarify, the Starbucks comment at the end was included because it was a funny thing to notice at the time.
While there, I had enough coffee and tiramisu from other sources, but I admit I did try out the Starbucks there. Sadly, they didn't take Starbucks card, nor did they get my name right for the sticker, but it was interesting to see some cocktail options there...
