I don't see how this ends well for Qualcomm.
It might end with Apple only making GSM phones I.e. ATT and T-Mobile in USA next year
The problem is that Qualcomm make the best chips for CDMA2000, they own the IP, and CDMA2000 is still in widespread use in the USA (Verizon and Sprint) and a few other countries. But CDMA2000's days are numbered with LTE set to eventually overtake it. When? I don't know. Maybe as long as 10 years in the US.

When that day happens, Intel and others can effectively ignore CDMA2000 support in baseband chips (and the majority of Qualcomm IP issues). Or maybe it takes someone like Apple to move that date up with Apple-designed UMTS/LTE-only baseband chips in future iPhones. Add in Samsung's Exynos baseband chips (which I don't believe support CDMA2000), and together their smartphone volume may push the carriers to LTE faster.

As Soli pointed out, the Apple Watch only works on UMTS/LTE (both GSM-based), but Verizon and Sprint already have (some) LTE support, so the AW works there. Maybe Apple are already pushing for LTE-only adoption starting with the AW?

  • Apple's claims about M1 Mac speed 'shocking,' but 'extremely plausible'

The graph below in the AnandTech article made it clear to me why Apple released their own M1 SoC when they did. Sure, it's only one benchmark, but the trend is unmistakable.

    Edit for grammar.

  • With Apple 5G modem likely in 2021, prospects for 5G iPhone in 2020 'in jeopardy'

I’d like to replace my 6s Plus with a new iOS device.
This is a pricey adventure and I want to make sure before I layout $1500-$2000 the device is 5G capable.
Apple could solve this problem quite easily if they could sort out their problems with Qualcomm.
I agree the 5G infrastructure isn’t there yet.  But Apple needs to have their devices 5G ready so it’s only a matter of a iOS update to turn it on.

Figure it out Apple, sooner than later!!!😡
Don't wait for 5G. There are two parts to 5G - the first is the 5G overlay on EXISTING frequencies (less than 6 GHz). The second is the frequency extension to millimeter wave frequencies (25+ GHz). The former should only require a modem change (existing antennas should be OK), but it's the latter that will also require now mmWave antennas to be added - that should take a few phone iterations to get the mmWave antennas optimized.

So I highly suspect that any phone that ships this year that says it supports 5G will only be supporting the first part.

It’s the Internet where 90% of the comments are from trolls, wishful thinkers and increasingly bots (if you were on Twitter or Facebook). So, always keep that in mind.
I suppose, but I think also just a ton of ignorant people. I saw a Twitter thread a bit ago where comments were saying you could build 10 PC with better performance for the price and stuff like that. I don't think most people have any clue what it actually is.

That argument is probably worth a closer look. If you can get 10 PCs working in parallel, do you get the same, better, or worse performance than a single Mac Pro? Google famously decided that a huge number of relatively basic machines, hooked up properly, would give better results in aggregate than a smaller number of more powerful machines - and that approach seems to have been the better one, but it's that "hooked up properly" step that took a huge amount of effort.
This is an interesting read in favour of a single Mac Pro doing real-time image processing.

  • HomePod, the iPod for your home

    robjn said:
The HomePod acoustic hardware is not just better than the cheaply made Amazon and Google products. It has technologies that are only found at the very high end of the audiophile market.

For example, HomePod has 360 degree beam forming tweeters. Compare this to the $6,300 BeoLab 20 - can it beam-form? No, it has what B&O call ALT (Advanced Acoustic Lens), how does ALT work? Ever cupped your hand around the speaker on your phone to direct the sound toward you? That is exactly what the BeoLab 20 has, a cup on the top that directs the sound to cover 180 degrees of the room. They market this extremely low tech feature as the speaker’s “crowning glory”. Nether-the-less B&O do have a speaker that can like HomePod beam-form over 360 degrees, it is the BeoLab 90. How much is a BeoLab 90? $35,000.

The cheaper smart speakers from Google and Amazon don’t even have dedicated woofers. Not only does HomePod have a dedicated woofer but this 4 inch woofer has a 20mm  excursion - something completely unheard of in the home speaker market! Apple has a microphone behind the driver that precisely measures the pressure changes so that the woofer can be dynamically adjusted to eliminate distortion - presumably using a proprietary technique described in a patent that was published last year.

Basically, HomePod contains technologies that rival very expensive audiophile products. This is also evidence in the fact that HomePod has a dedicated amp for each driver - another mark of high end products.

Considering the technology it contains, the low price of HomePod is astonishing.
OK, you piqued my interest technically. I had to find out more about this "smart speaker" as I didn't know about the tech inside. I found this article very helpful:

    https://www.idropnews.com/news/latest-apple-patent-explains-makes-homepod-special/44343/

    From the article:

"...the technology outlined in Apple’s patent is capable of intelligently and continuously adapting in real-time — rather than being calibrated every time."

I'm especially interested in how the internal microphones affect the speaker signals (what type of feedback is being used to correct the distortion). The article didn't go into that detail.

The patent seems to be here:

    http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2017/09/one-of-apples-detailed-homepod-patents-may-have-surfaced-today-at-the-us-patent-office.html

I wouldn't be surprised if more patents are forthcoming. Thanks for the info.

    I assume any new 5G modem is actually a 4G + 5G+ since 5G can't go through a cardboard box?
Qualcomm's first 5G chip, the X50, only did 5G, so it needed a companion chip to do 4G/3G/2G. QC's latest (second gen) chip, X55, does all in one chip. I expect that one to be in the 2020 iPhone.

Huawei's Balong 5000 chip does all in one chip.

Not sure about the others (Mediatek, Samsung).

The next article will take a closer look at how Apple was able to sneak past larger more entrenched silicon experts at Intel, Qualcomm, and Samsung while the media doubted its progress and bet that rivals would easily catch up.

Yup, I'm a lot more interested in how Apple did it, rather than how Samsung couldn't. But I guess it's a question of context.

    Money+time+management focus = success.

IMO PA Semi is the single most important prescient acquisition Apple have ever made. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mergers_and_acquisitions_by_Apple

I would love to see the Keynote slides presented to Apple's board of directors about acquiring PA Semi.

  • Apple debuts $699 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini

Was thinking about getting the iPhone SE 2020 for the small size and Touch ID but the battery life is a turn off. Can you use Face ID with a mask though?
No, not if you originally set up FaceID without the mask. However, there is an option in the "FaceID & Passcode" menu under Settings to set up an "Alternate Appearance" to include your mask.
