It's really simple. Kroger has decided that the benefit to it's customers doesn't justify the cost of upgrading to contactless payment terminals. Apple Pay is only one of several contactless options, all of which require upgraded payment terminals to work. Kroger is delaying the inevitable and probably wasted a lot of money creating a program that will eventually transition to Apple Pay.

Predicting that if 3 models get TrueDepth, they will be:

iPhone X
iPhone X Plus
iPad Pro

LCD iPhone will get standard cameras and Touch ID.

Two iPhones and two iPads so at least four models, not three.

But why do you believe the many rumors and leaks about three iphone models—and that one of the three is LCD—but disbelieve those same sources when they say the LCD has FaceID?

3 premium phones doesn’t seem plausible. A “budget” model seems likely, and for it to be less expensive it needs less premium features. The report didn’t indicate why the earnings indicated 3 devices or why they were specifically iPhone. I believe the very credible rumors that the iPad Pro will be gaining Face ID, and so one of the devices must be an iPad (or 2 - iPad sales far fewer than iPhone).
