  • Apple stuck the Mac mini power button on the bottom

Asinine. This is absolutely the WORST place you could possibly put the power button on a DESKTOP computer.
Inconvenient from a traditional mindset, but nowadays a power button doesn't get much use..
I hit the power button on my Mini EVERY DAMNED MORNING.
(dear lord why is this forum software STILL BROKEN, wiping out messages with some captcha nonsense?)

It’s raised so a finger can slip under.

But the intended use case is not to power down a Mac every day, you put it to sleep then wake from sleep. Don’t even remember the last time I did otherwise.
Sorry but I’m just going to flat out disagree with you. So you can slip a thin finger I under and feel around for it. (Of course that’s only possible if you have the tiny fingers of a child. For us grownups, we’ll have to lift it up to hit the button). That in and of itself makes this a stupid place for the power button. It should be visible so you aren’t fishing around in the dark. I maintained servers that had their power switch on the front. On a home machine this is inexcusable. You put the power switch on the side where you can see it. Secondly you should be powering down your system when you aren’t using it. Both for security, for the safety of the equipment, don’t know when a line surge will come down, and to save energy. All of our systems go down at night.

I know I sound angry, and you know what, this pisses me off. Apple is better than this. This is just stupid.

  • Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariffs hit every one of Apple's international manufacturing part...

We tried to warn them. We said that the inflation caused by his tariffs would be massive and devastating. I’m old enough to remember the late ‘70s ‘stagflation’. Guess what, it’s coming back with a vengeance.

  • Apple sued for $5M for not recovering data after iPhone theft

Ok but according to the article he ran a ‘Tech Consulting Firm’.
If so then he should have known better. He should have understood how to manage this. But from the sound of this all of his critical data was on iCloud. Were there no backups? Despite it being made very clear that iCloud is for file access and is NOT a backup and archiving service?
This case should be thrown out. If it isn’t, a good lawyer could dismantle him and his competency on the stand.

  • Apple stocks plummet, as Trump threatens 104% tariff on China

To think this utter madman also has his finger on the nuclear button. He’s out of control but none of his team can do anything about it. Bit like Putin.
Last night I was listening to a history podcast. the subject was Emperor Caligula. The important point was that everyone in the palace and in the Senate knew he was insane. They knew he was making stupid choices that were damaging the empire. But everyone was too busy either arguing on the floor of the Senate, and/or jockeying for their own position/power/wealth so nobody stepped in. I see similarities to today.

  • The dream of an all-glass iPhone will have to wait a bit longer

the screen is intended to flow down the sides of the iPhone, in a similar way to the Apple Watch display.
OK, but what about a case? Cases cover the sides up to the edge of the screen. If the screen wraps a distance down the side you either cover it with the case, or the case is less protective. This is a concern because as you said:
There is also the issue of strength, with the flowing edges introducing weak points affected by external impacts.
Honestly I don’t mind a narrow bezel around the screen.

  • iOS 18.4 lands with more Apple Intelligence, Apple Vision Pro app

Wow, I think this is the first time I’ve ever not wanted to install an update.

I’ll do it because there are likely some security updates, but I wish it were possible to not have all the AI stuff that, for me, just creates bloat.
If it’s any consolation, for the first time in a long time when I updated it did NOT turn Apple Intelligence on. I have it disabled and much to my surprise it stayed that way. Of course YMMV.

  • No, Apple isn't subliminally calling Trump a racist with its iPhone dictation feature

If conspiracy theorists weren’t getting all indignant over some imaginary slight, they’d have to deal with real issues.

  • Apple supplier Pegatron says tariffs will mean third world-style shortages for US

It sounds over the top when we’re talking about iPhones. Very “First World Problems” kind of thing. But by fall it will be hitting things like food. Do you ever buy grapes or strawberries in the winter? They come from overseas. Clothing? Unless you get your stuff hand made by a local tailor what you get comes from overseas. Plan on decorating for Christmas? Giving small gifts? Guess what…

So either a lot of stuff won’t be available at all, or will be but at hugely inflated prices. Meanwhile people in China will be working to make stuff for the rest of the world. It won’t impact them at all.

  • New report contradicts Tim Cook's remarks about iPhone panic buying

I can only speak to our experience:
We were going to hold onto our iPhone 11s until fall. But the threat of significantly higher prices pushed us to replace them with 16s last month.
We were going to get a Pro for me, which we did, and an e for my partner. We were buying them from our cell provider as they had a good deal on upgrades, but they only had one Pro and one base 16 left in stock. They were sold out of all other models. The salesman said that there had been an unexpected surge after Trump started hitting everyone with tariffs. His supplier was caught flat footed too and he wasn’t sure when they would get restocked.
We are in Canada, I can only imagine it being worse in the US.

FWIW Up here all the Apple products we get fly from Shanghai, to Kentucky where they clear customs. Then they get shipped to Windsor Ont where they clear customs again. The fear is we could get clipped by Trump’s tariffs on China AND Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on the US
