  • Apple planning on releasing 23-inch iMac, 11-inch iPad Air in 2020

Was hoping the refreshed iMac would be 27", bummer.
I don’t think this rumor precludes an updated 27” iMac, just that there may be a 23” iMac added to the line up. To be honest, a 23” iMac doesn’t even mean that there won’t be a 21” iMac anymore, although that is the model that the new model seems likely to replace.

The rumor does make me wonder if Apple will use the screen size as a differentiator between a normal iMac and an iMac Pro.

Regardless, I give 50/50 odds that any new enclosure will allow for user-upgradable RAM.

  • Apple's new 27-inch iMac sports 10th gen Intel chips, Nano Texture option

I have a couple questions before buying one:

For the high-end model, which processor has the best single-core performance?
Based on the available benchmarks, which have to be adjusted due to the fact that the 10-core chip in the iMac doesn't appear to be the same as the standard i9-10900, there is a reasonable chance that the 8-core i7 chip will have nearly the same (or maybe better) single core performance than the 10-core chip. This was not the case for the 2019 models. I need single core performance, so if I can save $400 by going with the i7 chip, then that would be great.

What exactly is the Radeon Pro 5700 XT?
There are so many different flavors of Radeons with the same number but different prefixes and suffixes, I can't keep track. The 16 GB card looks like a beast, but it's no Big Navi. I hope Barefeats can post some benchmarks soon.

I'm a bit bummed that the new iMac has a T2 chip in it - I realize the T2 chip does some great things, but it also means I can't swap SSDs if necessary. It also means that this is the beginning of the end for the hackintosh, which will be able to run the latest version of Mac OS until the 2019 iMac is no longer supported.

  • Intel-based iMac refresh will launch in the next week, leakers claim

Whether or not an update happens tomorrow [July 27th] or next week [August], the timing of the release means that there is very little chance that the new revision will include Navi 2 graphics, since those are supposedly not being released until September (or after).

That is disappointing because even the Radeon 5700 xt, which is likely to be included in the new high end iMac, can’t run games at the native 5k resolution at max settings. The Navi 2 cards, which should be out not long after the iMac refresh, ought to produce great frame rates at 5k.

While the 5k resolution was an amazing technical achievement when it was introduced, I’ve always been disappointed the that available graphics cards were never able to take full advantage of it. Now that the intel iMacs are going the way of the dodo, it will be a long wait until iMac owners will be able to play a large library of AAA games at 5k with decent frame rates.

I’m sure the graphics of the Apple silicon based iMacs will be great, but based on how things have gone in the past, I doubt there will be many timely ports of the latest and greatest games.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and Apple will be the one to debut the new Navi 2 chips, but I doubt that AMD will be inclined to do that now that Apple won’t be using them as a supplier moving forward. There is also a chance for a mid-cycle update that will add a Navi 2 graphics option, but since the Apple Silicon transition will be in full swing by that point, that chance seems to be very slim.

I wonder if “no redesign” means no T2 chip. If so, the fusion drive will probably hang around (boo). However, it would also mean that hackitosh builds will get a slightly longer lease on life, as long as this upcoming iMac model is supported by the OS.
