Kuo: Apple Watch Series 8 will gain body temperature sensing if its algorithm works
Surface skin surface temperatures vary wildly and are not “algorithmically related” to core temp (that’s why medical IR thermometers measure ear canal temp). Without actually sensing deep tissue or blood temperature I doubt this function be achieved to any degree of usefulness. Regressions and approximations are useful for statistical trends, but when you want to know whether you’re running a fever or at risk of hypothermia, averages won’t help. -
Intel targets M1 weaknesses in 'You're not on a Mac' ad campaign
I run compute-intensive jobs on my 1 yo Intel MBP sometimes. The machine gets too hot to keep on my lap and the fan kicks in at full blast and the battery starts dropping precipitously.
On my M1 Air I get nearly 30% more throughput, no fan, no heat, no drama. And I get practically an all-day battery.
There’s just no contest. But then CISC lost the RISC-CISC wars back in the early 90’s. Intel just didn’t get the memo.Looks like they still don’t get it.Marketing hype can’t beat real performance forever. Eventually hype runs out of gas.To wit: MSFT finally learned that lesson after pretending for years that they had a real OS while they were getting slaughtered by Linux in the server market. -
Meta's Orion preview shines a light on Apple's spatial computing future
Not everything Apple makes is going to be a hit: HomePod, AirPods Max, AVP. The AVP is a huge gambit, but not something ready for mainstream yet. And likely will never be until it’s an order of magnitude cheaper, more lightweight and, well, less goggly and tangly. The Meta thing is like an iPhone 25 mockup. About as equally far from reality. -
What the iPhone 15 Pro in gray titanium could look like
I would like lighter and better battery life, even if it means throttling the CPU for all but games (which I don’t play), including pesky cpu hogging webpages (smarter throttling for Safari would be awesome). The current specsmanship of X hours of continuous video playback is skewing design choices towards bulkier and heavier phones.I downsized from ProMax to Pro for lightness but didn’t like the loss of runtime. Sigh! -
'Apple Vision' could cut hundreds off price before late 2025 release
In the end it will come down to addressable market vs cost. The market size will start off small as this is a niche product (medicine, engineering, games, deep(er) pocket enthusiasts, ….).If Apple can expand the addressable market through apps (and:or lower the sticker price), the market size will increase. This is why more iPhones are sold compared to, say, HomePods. Addressable market. For me, $3500 would be well worth it if I could use it to experience a virtual 3x4k *seamless* display for my MBP (or whatever). Then the idea of ancillary benefits would be a carrot on top. But that’s me. You’re likely different. Are you in the initial addressable market (with the budget) or not?No wrong answers here -
