  • Upcoming macOS 11.3 update may remove Rosetta 2 in some regions

    j2fusion said:
Or, it could be because of an upcoming patent dispute. I cannot see any other reason why they would want to remove it since it works so well.
    With Intel? Seems odd.
    Other sites have more information:

Back in 2017, when Microsoft began work on Windows 10 for ARM, the company announced x86 app emulation just like Apple. However, Intel threatened Microsoft by claiming that the x86 architecture has proprietary technologies and could not be emulated on other processors without permission.

Although Windows 10 ARM was capable of emulating 32-bit apps from the x86 architecture, 64-bit app emulation was only recently added in an Insider Preview build — which could be related to Intel’s patents. Apple could be getting ready to face a similar dispute with its Rosetta 2 technology.

  • AirPods Max review: it's not easy to justify the price

Only Apple would make headphones without a headphone jack, without a power switch, with cloth that will get dirty, worn out, and hard to clean, and cripple the control of your music when you use their $35 wired cable for better audio.

Didn't AI recently have an article on how to disable the automatic device switching because it is annoying when the AirPods switch to another device without your control?  Like when they automatically switch to your Mac when you wanted to keep listening on your iPhone?

I have the Sony MX3s and they are amazing.  Excellent sound quality, excellent ANC, fold into a compact hard case, wired connection included, USB-C, excellent controls by swiping on the right ear (or covering the right ear to turn off ANC temporarily), customizable software in the Sony app, and zero issues with Bluetooth connection or wired (preferred for better audio), and all for over $200 less.

You nailed it with this review.  Mediocre sound quality (typical of all Apple sound products) and not good enough to justify the $549 price.  Apple could have had something if they were $349 or less to compete with Bose and Sony, but no audiophile will buy these headphones if that was the market they were hoping for.  Audiophiles or recording artists do not listen to Bluetooth audio.

  • UPS returning some AirPods Max shipments to Apple as 'hazardous materials' [u]

If it contains lithium batteries, those must typically be shipped by ground transport. This might be what this is about.
Wrong. How do you think iPhones get here from China?

Lithium batteries that are part of electronics equipment are permitted on aircraft.

You are not entirely correct because there are very strict requirements that must be met to transport items with lithium ion batteries, especially as a shipment.  And he is correct, typically within the United States, items with Lithium Ion batteries are shipped by Ground.

  • Compared: Apple's 2020 iPad Air versus 2020 11-inch iPad Pro

@AppleInsider Guys its two separate articles now where you make the mistake of stating the 2020 iPad Air has two speakers. It has the same 4 speaker design as the iPad Pro except they  are only advertised as operating  in landscape
It does not have the same speaker system as the Pro.  It has a two-speaker system that only produces stereo sound in landscape mode.  Apple's webpage clearly specifies this.  The Air has two speaker audio landscape mode.  The Pro has a 4-speaker audio system (that produces stereo sound in both portrait and landscape modes).  In portrait mode, the two top speakers produce the highs and the bottom speakers produce the lows.

  • Apple's MagSafe Duo Charger now available for $129

For $19, you can buy Apple's USB-C charger and charge your phone at the full 20W with the lightning cable.  For $129 + $49, you can charge at only 14W.  For $129 + $19, you can charge at a measly 11w.  This being a product that requires two hands to get your phone off the magnet without causing your watch to fly across the room.  And a product so cheaply made, only the cheap plastic material holds the two sides together.  Who would fall for this?  Talk about getting ripped off.

  • MacBook Pro with SD card slot, no Touch Bar coming in 2021

    TouchBar forever!

As long as there’s a physical ESC key...

Pro Cameras have WiFi built in, and even if not, transferring pictures is done rarely, easily done with a tumbdrive-style adapter. Why waste space on a dedicated slot?
The touchbar has always been a joke.  Good riddance.  How do you know transferring pictures is done rarely?  I am sure photographers do it daily.  The SD slot in prior MacBooks did not take up any space that affected the use of the MacBook.  My 2015 MacBook Pro has MagSafe, Thunderbolt, USB, Audio Out, HDMI, and an SD slot.  None of those ports waste space.  I also don't need dongles.

  • Report finds AirTag enables 'inexpensive, effective stalking'

The article also left out the fact that if the iPhone is not running iOS 14.5 or later, the 'missing' AirTag won't alert the nearby phone.  Not everyone installs the latest updates and some people still have phones that can't run iOS 14.  So chalk those people up with the Android users that won't know if an AirTag has been secretly planted on them.  It is also scary to know that you can be tracked for 3 days without being warned.

Why this vital information was left out of the review is disturbing.  At least the Ars article mentioned this significant issue with AirTags.  One could be planted on your car and you would never know it.  It is also documented on how easy it is to disable the speaker too.

For the life of me, I can’t understand why anyone is assuming that a return of MagSafe means a return of either of the old MagSafe connectors when we know for a fact that neither of them are used in MagSafe on iPhones. Indeed, given the sequence in time, I submit that it’s vastly more likely that this leak is more likely to mean some iteration of the current MagSafe tech, which is consistent with a recent Apple patent that showed MagSafe charging pads in the palm rests for charging an iPhone.
Because the reports have stated, "The MagSafe connector in the new MacBook Pro models will have a similar shape to that of MagSafe connectors in Macs of old."  MagSafe in the iPhone is NOT a MagSafe connector.  It is inductive charging.  The report also says the MagSafe port in the new MacBook Pro would be able to charge faster, something the MagSafe in the iPhone CANNOT do.  Just because Apple files a patent, does not mean they actually introduce it.  Charging a phone on your palm rest is ridiculous because how are you supposed to use the MacBook when your phone is sitting on the palm rest?

SD card slot would be a backwards move that I can’t see Apple taking.
Just like Apple going backwards and re-introducing the scissor mechanism keyboard to replace the failed butterfly keyboard?  The Touchbar is a failure.  Removing the Touchbar also helps reduce the cost of the product.

  • iFixit teardowns reveal M1 MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro nearly identical to Intel mode...

iFixit is hell bent on stopping innovation and hardware advancements by demanding things be “repairable” according to whatever their definition of the term is. If iFixit had their way every component would be socketed, everything else connected with plugs and cables, weigh a ton, pop open, and be ugly as sin. Screw these douches.
Why are you so hell bent on not being allowed to do your own repairs when the warranty expires?  You are so full of BS.  Repairability is the ease to repair the item yourself with access to the same parts, without paying Apple a fortune to do what you have every right to do on your own.  It is not stopping innovation.  Your argument makes you sound ridiculous.  How about if you were not allowed to work on your own car, like changing your own oil?  How would you feel about that?  I have saved a ton of money by being able to do my own repairs on Macs that are well out of warranty because the parts were not cemented in with heavy glue.
