iMessage Contact Key Verification appears in first iOS 16.6 beta
appleinsideruser said:So, as there can be multiple device logged into the same iCloud (messages) account, this system somehow knows which ones are really me and warns me if there is another device active on the account?
How does it know which ones are real and which ones are eavesdroppers? If it can tell, why not just prevent the eves-dropper from connecting in the first place? From my understanding, this isn’t addressing some unannounced hack or vulnerability but addressing a possible attack vector created by how iCloud works—
iMessage allows its users to sync their conversations between devices logged in on the same iCloud account so that you can continue on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac regardless of where it was initiated. Previously when a new device was added, only the adding party was notified of the new device. With this new setting both parties will be notified. So with this option enabled, should a third party manage to gain access to one of the other party’s iCloud account and thereby include the device in the conversation, not only will the breached user be notified of the new device, but as well the one being conversed with. -
Apple readying for legal battle against European Union's App Store regulations
darkvader said:Apple needs to give up this one. It's insane that I can't load whatever software I want on MY iPhone from whatever source I choose.Hopefully once they're forced to do the right thing in Europe they'll go ahead for the rest of the world too.
What’s insane is that
1) Apple hid the fact that all the apps must be downloaded from their App Store
2) Never allowed side loading or jailbreaking
3) Forced users to purchase their gear
4) Prohibited other platforms

It’s a shame more thought wasn’t given into what you’re getting when you bought your iPhone -
Researcher testing Apple CloudKit accidentally took Shortcuts completely down
rob53 said:"Frans Rosen, a bug bounty hunter for security firm Detectify" and the title calls him a researcher? He's a hacker, plain and simple. True security researchers don't allow what they're doing to impact people outside their local testing net. I don't care if Apple gave him some money, I'd like to see how many people he affected so he can use that money to pay them for breaking the system.Anyone doing actual scientific research should not be testing live servers as they can not be certain that what they are finding is solely due to their actions. That’s just basic methodology that’s being ignored.
If I take joy in driving at an excessive speed, instead of being fined when caught should I be paid a bounty by claiming I am testing vehicle performance and or roadway characteristics? -
Mac keyboard showdown: Apple versus chiclet versus mechanical
The only thing I miss from my windows days 20 years ago is the Microsoft natural ergonomic keyboard. The older ones from the 90s were dead on perfect for hours and hours of typing for me.
I tried to continue to use them on macs, but as they weren’t native it was a bit clunky and then finally gave them up at some point in the Bluetooth era.
Still wish though to this day that someone would out right rip that design off but make it a native Mac keyboard. -
Hands on with the new iOS 15 CarPlay features
waveparticle said:CloudTalkin said:The feature updates are nice I guess, but nothing to write home about imo. I think Apple is missing an opportunity. I think they need to pull a Google and do a CarPlay OS that's equivalent to Android Automotive. For those unaware of what I'm referencing, Android Automotive is an OS for OEM car manufacturers. It's part of G.A.S. Google Automotive Services. It is different from Android Auto, which like CarPlay, is essentially a phone based infotainment overlay.
Apple could very well have OEM initiatives going on behind the scenes. Idk. I can only speak to what they've announced: phone based CarPllay improvements. Yay, I guess. I just feel like their efforts would be better served at the integrated level of automobiles instead of as a 3rd party overlay.——— ——— ——— ——— ———This is my hope, that Apple Car isn’t a vehicle, but a platform. Think HomeKit for your vehicle. Either an OBD dongle, or aftermarket head unit, that controls the lights, locks, cameras etc of a vehicle just like HomeKit items. CarKey is nice, but a real shame that so few of even Apple’s customers will ever experience it. But if a $150 - $1000 device was available that could be installed in any late model vehicle, that would greatly expand Apple’s ecosystem.
