  • New Macs in 2025 rumored to get at least one major design refresh

My guess is the Mac Pro will get a massive redesign. It doesn't need to be that large as it doesn't need as much room for the power supply and cooling. The Mac mini might be neat to see a new design around the size of the AppleTV, almost the size of a Raspberry Pi.
They need to knock off that useless ugly notch!

  • Phone encryption debate will reignite over attempted Trump assassination

You wouldn't be having this conversation again if the assailant didn't have a gun! America's problem is guns, not encryption. Unlike every other developed country in the world - Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada and the countries of Europe, to name a few, America finds it impossible to do universal public healthcare and gun control. Less guns = less gun crime and no guns = no gun crime (obvs, leaving aside for a moment the issue of any illegal arms trading; but that's why police and customs exist). Y'all can argue about things like knife crime but it's easier to shoot someone from hundreds of metres away rather than stab them (where you'd have to be up close and they could more easily take up the fight).

Since 1996, when we had our last mass shooting event, Australia implemented a comprehensive programme of gun confiscation (yes, the government took our guns from us by force; but paid us for them because it was a compulsory acquisition of property) and gun control (practically nobody can get a gun licence, save for game hunters). Guess what! We've had no mass shootings and no political assassinations since then. The other side of the coin is that political assassinations aren't part of our political history or culture because our politicians don't turn up the temperature the way America's Republicans do; although the Libs (our conservatives) here try sometimes.

Y'all can argue the toss and try on all the counterpoints you like, but the empirical evidence from Australia is that gun control works - so stop with the faux arguments about encryption and what you can learn about the shooter in hindsight (what he had on his phone doesn't matter now, because he carried out his attack - he was allowed to sneak onto a roof, within a couple hundred metres of the oompa loompa, with a rifle in hand).

America needs gun control, not encryption hacks or backdoors.

  • Bigger and brighter: iPhone 16 & iPhone 16 Pro rumored screen changes

"Apple has shifted from the dreaded notch to the more loved Dynamic Island..."

More loved? Ummm, that would be a NO for me. At least the notch was integrated into the overall bezel design. Does Nothing Island just sits there like a pill-shaped black hole sucking out all the light and usefulness from the upper middle of your screen. It's clearly destined for the trash heap next to Touch Bar, 3D Press and other rejected Apple interfaces and that can't happen soon enough for me. I honestly don't mind that Apple tries new things out, but I wish they'd ditch the failures like Does Nothing Island more quickly.
The notch is ugly, it always has been - it is the main reason I have steadfastly stuck with the notchless iPhone SE. The dynamic island does many things because it is enhanced by software in iOS. When the dynamic island is not doing any of the extra things, re notifications and providing quick access to app controls like music, etc, it does exactly the same thing the ugly notch did (house the face ID camera and sensors).

The notch is even more useless on MacBooks, which do not even have face ID, it just takes up menu bar space for no good reason - again, the ugly notch on MacBooks is the main reason I have steadfastly stuck with my 12yo MacBook Pro w/retina display (which also still has plenty of storage and runs well even after 12 years on the track with me).

I won’t update from my M1 air until they get rid of the notch on pro models.  I hate the notch..
I take your M1 Air and raise you a 2012 Intel Retina MBP. That notch is ugly af and useless.

  • Touch screen issues hit iPhone 16 Pro and older models

It’s not just the iPhone 16s, I’ve been experiencing these touch screen sensitivity issues on my iPhone SE (2022) - the screen won’t respond to touches (particularly in Messages and particularly if a text selection menu is open) and the only way to get around it seems to be closing and reopening the app or locking and unlocking the iPhone.

  • iPad updated with A16 chip, still lacks Apple Intelligence

Apple is still also selling its first generation Apple Pencil as an optional accessory with this new 10th gen (11th gen) iPad. The first gen Apple Pencil pairs and charges via a lightning connector, but this iPad has USB C - so nobody will be able to pair it with this 2025 iPad! The second gen Apple Pencil with USB C, which is cheaper than the OG Apple Pencil, is the only viable pencil accessory. Sometimes, you must wonder what is going on in the minds of Apple’s product teams. 😆

  • New iPhone 16e offers Apple Intelligence at a low price point

Steve wouldn’t’ve launched this iPhone, it’s terrible!

This is a 2-3yo design that doesn’t even look like an iPhone 16, so idk why they branded it a 16.

The ‘e’ is a clumsy leftover from the SE, it doesn’t even mean anything.

This iPhone doesn’t have an edge to edge display, because its hideous 8yo notch gets in the way.

Imagine trying to sell an iPhone 12 user on an iPhone without MagSafe, which has been a standard feature for five years now!

  • Apple's upcoming low-cost MacBook: Colorful and affordable

So, basically, in 2026, Apple wants to release a low cost MacBook with a two year old chip it launched in 2024 for an iPhone; and this MacBook may only have 8GB RAM to play with. Once you spec it out with more RAM or a bigger SSD, it won’t be so budget friendly.

The only thing this machine will have going for it is its colours, which won’t even pair up to the iMac that comes in seven colours.

It might be good for the primary and secondary education markets, and maybe also for older users new to computing, but I can’t see its colours luring away users looking for a machine that can perform (like the Air or the Pro).
