  • Apple Maps shows users the Gulf of Mexico when searching for 'Gulf of America'

Now that inflation and the cost of living have been fully-addressed by the new administration, we can deal with this most-pressing of issue facing Americans everywhere. After this, we can finally deal with that “New Mexico” nonsense.

(Edit: That was sarcasm in case there was any confusion.)

  • New iPhone 16e offers Apple Intelligence at a low price point

Basically half of the office was discussing the iPhone 16e just now. And when someone finally asked “How much is it?”, the answer immediately turned everybody off of the phone. Talk quickly changed to the “Sony (something)” or the “Samsung (not sure)”.

(I’m not trying to be dismissive of Sony or Samsung. I just not super-familiar with Android and don’t remember the names everybody said.)

Important to note that my office is a Japanese office. So we were discussing the price of phone in yen. At ever-so-slightly under ¥100,000 (¥99,800, tax included), everybody (that spoke up) instantly dismissed it completely.

In dollar terms, with the tax excluded, the Japanese price is basically the same as the American price. But maybe psychologically nobody wants to pay ¥100,000 for an entry level phone (and pricing it 200 yen below 100,000 doesn’t matter, lol). I have an Apple Balance of about $650 USD (in actual USD — on my USD Store Apple Account), so I was just simply thinking about the phone in USD terms. But in JPY terms… maybe it’ll be a tough sell in Japan. Though my sample size for saying that is just one small Japanese office’s worth of people, lol.

I’m curious now about the pricing in other regions of the world.

(Enough of that though. Coffee break over. Back to work!!!)

  • Apple may be hit with a big antitrust fine in France over App Tracking Transparency

Two people with knowledge of the regulator's plans told Reuters on Thursday that a ruling will be arriving in March. "The decision is expected in the spring," the regulator confirmed, but declined to comment further.

The link to the Reuters article is broken (the URL got cutoff). I believe this URL below is to the article you intended to link to:

  • These are the best iPhone 16e cases that add MagSafe back

Keep in mind that the cases will allow you to use a MagSafe charger, but you're still going to be charging at 7.5 watts, not at 25 watts as you would if the phone actually had MagSafe built in.
15 watts is the MagSafe cap.
15w is the MagSafe max for iPhone 12/13/14/15. But for the iPhone 16/Plus/Pro/Pro Max models, those phones can charge up to 25w with MagSafe (if using the 2024 Apple MagSafe Charger and a 30w or higher power adapter).

  • Justice Department demands Google sell off Chrome in new filing

Interesting to see who would “buy” Chrome, for how much, and why. Not like it’s very good as a direct source of revenue.
As an example, you can look at Opera’s (the company) earnings reports to see how Opera (the browser) makes money for the company. But basically: Search, advertising, technology licensing.

  • After strong earnings, Morgan Stanley inches up AAPL target to $275

I never listen to the analysts when they up a “stock price target” because they never give a timeline. Sure it will reach it  but when?
Price targets are there for financial news outlets to have something to report on. Many analysts would rather not even give price targets. People who actually pay for analysts reports often care very little about the price targets that analysts are told to write. The people who pay for the research will assign their own price targets.

In a past life I used to write for a financial research company. I would assign price targets to my research… but… I never actually wanted to because it’s arbitrary. I don’t know what the price will be in 12 months. And nobody else does either. 12 months is way too short of a timeframe. If I had to give a price target, I would rather go 5+ years. I still wouldn’t want to give a price target, but 5+ years is at least a long enough period of time. However, that’s too long for financial news outlets. Heck, 12 months is often too long. Tell me what the price will be a week from now! lol

You spend all this time doing the research and writing the report… but who cares, right? Just summarize it with a dollar amount and a 12 month timeframe. That would be great. Thanks. ߤ㦬t;br> (Edit: Weird. This random text to the left was suppose to be a laughing emoji. Does this comment section not support emojis? Ah well.)

But that was a past life, haha. I don’t do financial research (professionally) anymore.

  • iPhone 16e review: All the bells, none of the whistles on this battery-heavy device

    eriamjh said:
MagSafe isn’t the big loss it’s made out to be.  MagSafe can be added on using a case.   If you like to go naked, then you’ll miss it.
I know people often use “MagSafe” and “wireless charging with magnets” interchangeably, but: MagSafe is a wireless charging standard (a standard that uses magnets). The iPhone 16e does not support MagSafe and a case will not add it. A case with magnets will add.., well, magnets. And that’s it.

  • Apple will try to right the Apple Intelligence Siri ship, but don't expect firings

Wait, what? “Rumor Score: Likely”, but what’s the rumor?

I feel silly asking because it seems like I’m missing something super obvious. But I did read the article twice and I don’t actually know what the rumor is. Or is the rumor simply that Apple will try harder and nobody will get fired?

  • Foldable iPhone and iPad will both launch in 2026, says analyst

    Pema said:
Foldable iPad makes perfect sense. Avoid having to carry a separate keyboard-as-a-case.

A foldable iPhone is a waste of time and money on a phone that by 2026 will reach the 20th anniversary of a product that has been milked just as long. Why not invest the resources on a new product to excite the Apple devotees?

I mean, that’s easier said than done. Just make an exciting new product category. No problem.

New products to excite were going to be the Apple Car and the Apple Vision Pro. For former is obviously not going to happen anymore and the latter is… well… it’s a new product.

And Apple is investing resources now on another new product. It’s called Apple Intelligence. And… it’s… also new.

It’s not like Apple isn’t trying new things. Apple has been working on a lot of new things. But it’s, you know, difficult.
