  • Apple execs explain why you should use Apple Maps over competitors

Apple Maps has some really big UX fails which mean Imalways go back to Google Maps. In particular it is close to useless if you are the “navigator” while someone eslse is driving. A vast part of the screen is taken up with a panel showing details of the place when you search for a destination, and there are only two ways of seeing the map full screen (that I have found). Firstly you can click the X to close the panel, but then you lose the route. Secondly you can start the route, but there is no way of switching to a mode where you control what you are looking at, or lose the directions.

It surely should be possible to use it like a map book, but with the route displayed on it? This seems really fundamental to me but the UX designers seem to have almost wilfully stopped you from using it that way.

Other things that bug me in CarPlay is that you can only have the display in dark mode or “automatic” when it seems to always be in dark mode as well. Why can’t you set it to always be in light mode? This doesn’t make any sense to me. The ideal scenario would be a quick and easy way to manually change it to the mode you want, not the mode that Apple seems to think you should want.

Another failing is the difficulty in CarPlay of seeing what is coming up on the map a little bit further ahead than what is immediately in front of you. Viewing of the map is extremely limited.

Finally another annoyance is that the warnings for speed cameras are only given when you are using it in routing mode. Why can’t you switch on the warnings even when you are not following a route?

  • Nothing kills iMessage bridge because it profoundly violated user privacy & security

This either proves that doing this stuff right isn’t easy, or that doing it wrong is. Either way it’s a very good reason to stay with Apple.

The more we can starve the government of income the less destructive it will be for the people. Apple should not pay one penny more in taxes than it absolutely has to. Use every loophole, every legal means to reduce one's tax bill. That should be everyone's personal motto too.
Puerile anarchistic libertarian rubbish. Do you honestly think we can do without schools, roads, railways, defence, police, courts, prisons, and all the other things that keep our society going? How is all of that going to be paid for in your world? The only way you can make that work is to have everyone be wealthy and live in their own castle with nothing but wasteland in between. A bit like South Africa, or the way in which the USA is heading. Good luck with that.

  • EcoFlow Advanced Kit review: Power your whole house with batteries

I really don't want to be mean, but personally I think a journalist should understand enough about what he is writing so that it makes sense.

This is one paragraph that particularly demonstrates the lack of understanding:

"The Advanced Kit expands the kWh from 702 to 21.6. The battery holds 7,200W and can output up to 240V of power. This energy will give you up to one week of administrated power to your home."

    (1) "the kWh (is expanded) from 702 to 21.6". Really? Anyone can see that 21.6 is not an expansion of 702.

    (2) The battery holds 7,200W and can output up to 240V of power. 7,200W is not a capacity, it is a rate of consumption. Capacity is expressed in kWh, rate of consumption in kW. It's not completely wrong to say that 240v is a measure of power, but it's not strictly correct either. My guess from reading the article is that the capacity of one unit (not the "advanced kit") is 3,600Wh (3.6kWh) which is pretty weedy but would probably power a car for up to about one mile of use (at 3.5kWh/mile, say) disregarding any electrical losses.

    (3) "up to one week of administrated power" What does this mean? The length of time until the unit discharges is dependant on how fast the power is consumed. It might mean that its self-discharge rate is so high that after a week of it sitting there, whether used or not, the stored energy has all discharged. This statement needs to be explained.

There are plenty of other unanswered questions here. Either the journalist needs to understand the subject better, or it needs to be edited by someone who does.

  • Apple's iOS 17.2 gives Qi2 charging all the way back to iPhone 13

Hopefully this will resolve the issue with charging in my 2021 VW Golf? It has never worked since the car was new - you get a message saying "Currently unable to charge the mobile device. Please remove all other items from the mobile phone tray." Needless to say there are no other items in the tray.

In addition when you pick up the phone it has changed to the Wallet and appears to be waiting for a payment to be made.

Because the car is yet to have its first service I have not asked whether there may be a software upgrade to one of the vast number of different electronic modules in modern cars (particularly the Mk 8 Golf, seemingly). But it may be that iOS 17.2 will finally address this issue?

You may want to revisit your Settings. You should have a choice of Light, Dark, or Automatic.
No, I just confirmed that the choices are "Always Dark" or "Automatic".

Whichever I choose it is practically always in dark mode (I have once or twice seen it in light mode) which is nothing like as clear to follow as the light mode, but I have absolutely no way that I have found of forcing it into light mode. I can, however, set Google Maps into light mode so that is another reason I prefer to use Google Maps.

  • Apple's T2 chip has an unfixable vulnerability that could allow root access

@Svanstrom - your frankly hysterical post gets things totally out of proportion. Do you REALLY, seriously, think that some "moron with a knife" will read about an Apple vulnerability and then decide to target you? You have some serious issues, man. Come on, get some sense of proportion!

  • iPhone replacement cycles slowing down to four years, pose threat to services, analyst say...

Well I’m totally happy with my 6S and (1) don’t want to lose my headphone jack, (2) don’t want a bigger phone because it won’t fit in my pocket, (3) don’t need any more performance, and (4) don’t want to pay the price for a newer phone (even though I could happily afford to).

In fact I am so satisfied with what the 6S offers that I have just bought another one for £299 from John Lewis while I can still buy a brand new one. I have also replaced my wife’s 6S with another one when she dropped it in the water, and my daughter’s 6 with a 6S.

I know that in time we will have to upgrade when iOS no longer supports the 6s satisfactorily, but for me it will be a sad day.

At a time when one can buy entirely decent recently introduced Android phones for around the £200 mark I just dont get how Apple thinks they can stay above critical mass with the prices they are expecting people to pay for their new phones.

  • Jean-Louis Gassee doesn't know who an iPad is for, and thinks you don't either

I value my iPad very greatly, so my response to Gasée is "absolute humbug!" I use an iMac 27 in my home office, and anything less would simply not do the job. I totally don't understand why anyone uses a laptop in an office setting.

I have my iPhone for calls and light duty app stuff, but beyond that when I am out of the office I use my iPad, and it is a fantastic tool in meetings and when I need to catch up on email or anything else where a larger screen than my iPhone is required.

I can see that for some people a laptop is great when out of the office, but the iPad is more portable and more flexible and suits me just fine.

Why do people like Gassee feel they need to proclaim in the way that they do? He is diminishing himself in my eyes (he is after all a flawed genius) by not appreciating that not everyone feels like he does, and some value their iPad very highly. Let them, please!

  • EcoFlow Advanced Kit review: Power your whole house with batteries

I agree that the article is a bit confusing.

W is a unit of power which does have a time or rate component, while W/hr is used for energy - either consumption as in how much energy your house or EV is using, or capacity, as in how much energy your battery can deliver.

BTW, most EVs now can go about 4 miles/kWh, so 14 mi is possible on 3.5kWh.

Voltage (V) all by itself is not an indication of power. Sometimes it is called "potential" because it is not until current (amperage or "A") flows that power is delivered. A higher voltage has a higher "potential" for power at any given current. This is basic Ohms law, where W=V*A
OK, thanks for the corrections on the strict definitions of the terms, but presumably you agree with the heft of my post?

And thanks for the correction regarding the EV efficiency - I got that the wrong way round.
