  • Apple continues to dominate best-selling smartphones rankings despite recent S9 launch

    This can’t be, the iPhone X is way too expensive and doesn’t offer anything new. No way iPhone X could be the/a top seller 8 months in a row.  Everybody knows that Android is the best selling OS and Samsung makes the best smartphones, for less money.

    International pricing is also an issue when a moderately configured 2016 MBP 15" set you back over $3700, that is also not very good.

    International pricing is not just a currency exchange rate thing.  Most countries (if not all) outside the US employ a national sales tax (in varying degrees) known as VAT (Value Added Tax).  It is the lack of a national sales tax in the US that makes buying a Toyota/Mercedes in the US cheaper than it does in Japan/Germany.

    Unlike the US where the price of an item is advertised WITHOUT sales tax, outside of the US the advertised price INCLUDES the national sales tax.  If you were to deduct the national sales tax and convert local currency to US$, you will find pricing to be quite close to each other.

  • Qualcomm must license modem tech to rivals like Intel, court rules

    I’m calling BS on this. “Far” superior? Show me some independent testing that confirms this. Also, Qualcomm isn’t an acronym. Finally, you’ve owned every single model of iPhone from the original to the Max? Yeah, you’re either a QCOM employee or just trolling.
    Maybe both.

  • The story of the original iPhone, that nobody thought was possible

    Plus, the original iPhone wasn’t “shipped to customers” on launch day. You could only buy it, in person, at an Apple Store or AT&T. It wasn’t like today where you can preorder to receive it on launch day.
    I stooid in line for 4 hours to get mine at an ATT store in Spokane WA.  The entire time I was in line it drizzled rain.  I can't remember being so happy to get a product as I was then.  Several iPhones since and I'm still very happy.

  • Apple exec Eddy Cue 'overextended,' falling asleep in meetings

    This looks sort of like an effort to get Cue fired. I support that effort because to me he seems like dead weight.
    My post on another site.

    "You can’t have it both ways. Cook is a genius, the best person for the job and his lieutenants are not up to the job.

    In my estimation, Cook does not suffer incompetence in the slightest (Scott Forestall and John Browett come to mind). Just because we, as outsiders, can’t see what Cue is doing doesn’t translate to incompetence.

    Eddy Cue, the leader of the company’s sprawling internet initiatives—from its music and video businesses to its maps service.

    That Services is growing at an extended (4) year 30+% average compound rate is all I need to know about his effectiveness."

    I really hope they resolve this quickly, because based on my owning every model of iPhone from 2007 to the Max, there’s no question that the QUALCOMM modem is far superior to the Intel version. I  was so fortunate to have QUALCOMM modems in my iPhones right up through iPhone X.  As much as I love my Max,  I’m very disappointed with the quality of the Intel modem. Apple, are you listening?
    My house is located at the base of a bluff with the nearest tower located on the top and about a half mile back.  My family room is located in the basement.  I have zero issues with Intel radios on MY Max.

  • Apple's Phil Schiller reveals iPad Pro A12X chip design process in interview

    Given the way Apple's teams work together to design software and processors/GPUs, it does beg the question [again] as to what it would take for the same focus to power Macs with Apple-designed chipsets.

    Apple publicly says "no way" but the issue has to be there.  Just the cost savings alone, not to mention overcoming technical limitations (Intel's LPDDR4 support history), for 20 million Macs per year could warrant the project.

  • Apple will double 'iPhone 7' minimum storage to 32GB - report

    Interesting to see if some of us "up/down-grade":
      - Upgrade MODEL: 6s --> 7
      - Downgrade STORAGE:  64 --> 32

    ... to get the latest technology at a lower-than-normal incremental cost.
    I wouldn't be surprised at all if Apple introduced memory  at 32GB standard at $649, 64GB + $100, 256GB + $100.  The 256 GB model will have functionality not available on the lesser models (as they do now).  The iPhone SE will continue at 16GB standard.  My iPhone 4/5 had 32GB, but I never used the extra memory.  The extra memory is on my iPad.

    I thought they used DHL and FedEx cargo planes.
    Something about this story just doesn't smell right. Why would Apple ship, at this stage of a new product launch, via a slow boat from China, especially when Hanjin (a major ocean shipping firm) has its fleet moored because of its bankruptcy. Then add into the equation that US carriers are out of stock, as are Target, Wal=Mart, Best Buy. etc. Then consider that getting to Europ-e via sea will take about 8 days longer than getting to the US west coast. If you wanted to hurt sales this would be the way to do it.
