  • Bug in macOS Ventura is breaking some networks

According to a Reddit thread, the SMB issue seems to be connected to custom icons on the network shares. Once I mapped my shares directly to folders instead of the drives (which have hard-coded custom icons via SoftRAID), hunted down any custom icons within the shared folders, and removed any custom icons from the backup jobs that copy from my MacBook Pro to the shares on my Mac mini server, SMB started working reliably for me again. I only encountered the issue after upgrading to 13.2.

  • Apple Original sci-fi drama 'Invasion' renewed for third season

Great, now do “For All Mankind”, which has surprisingly not been renewed yet. With the news that production on “Foundation” has been halted amidst budget issues, it’s starting to look like Apple is becoming more budget-conscious with its big sci-fi franchises. If they can maintain the quality of the shows at lower budgets, that’s great, but it would be sad to see such big creative swings hobbled or even cancelled because Apple wants to see an even bigger profit margin on Services revenue.

  • iPad mini 6 review: One year later, still a great reader and streamer

I owned the iPad mini 6 for about a year, and agree with just about everything in this piece, except for the criticism of the lack of FaceID. I ended up selling my mini to a friend when I finally came to the conclusion that, for a certain subset of my reading, I really need a larger screen, much as I would miss the hand-holdability of the mini. In the process of trying to find the best fit for my needs, I tried a 2018 11" iPad Pro, a 2020 iPad Air, and a 2022 M1 iPad Air (my final pick), and to my great surprise, I found that FaceID was actually more of an irritant than a benefit on a hand-held iPad, and it's related to a change that Apple made when they first moved TouchID to the top/power button.

When TouchID was in the Home Button, you could rest your finger on the button to unlock the iPad, then press the button to "open" the iPad and go to the Home Screen. FaceID only takes care of the first step of that process - unlocking the iPad - but you still have to swipe up on the screen (or press a key on an attached keyboard) to get to the Home Screen. With TouchID in the power button, Apple had to get rid of the second step, as pressing the power button would turn off the screen, and it would be very awkward to do TouchID at the top of the device, then swipe up from the bottom of the device to get to the Home Screen. Instead, power button TouchID goes straight to the Home Screen - I honestly find it faster and more convenient than FaceID because it doesn't require the second step. For an iPad that's used primarily with a Magic Keyboard, FaceID is probably the better option, as hitting a key takes the place of the swipe gesture, but for an iPad that is used primarily as a tablet, I prefer power button TouchID (unless Apple changes FaceID to get rid of the second step).

  • Monitor Roundup: The best external displays to use with your Mac

I wish there were more smaller hiDPI displays available - after owning two 27" iMacs and a 21.5", I prefer the latter, especially with the availability of 4K resolution now. Unfortunately, the only 4k display at that size is the LG sold only by Apple, and it's a bit of an odd duck, since it's USB-C rather than Thunderbolt 3. On top of the lack of a FaceTime camera, there's the bewildering decision to put USB-C ports on the 4K display that only run at USB2 speed - anything that isn't hamstrung by the speed (Wacom tablets, keyboards, etc) would still need a USB-A to USB-C adapter, for which you get no benefit at all; should have just put USB-A ports on it.

  • NBC's cash-strapped 'Breaking News' app & social media feeds to shut down this week

The abject ignorance being exhibited here is galling, and obviously comes from people who have never actually used the app (and one who apparently used to, but made an incorrect assumption after the NBC purchase).

As the story states, the most recent reviews on the App Store are mourning the loss of the app because it pulled from many sources around the world, and didn't editorialize at all. It didn't just link to NBC after the purchase - how could it, when it was literally a Breaking News app? NBC didn't break every story domestically, let alone world-wide, so relying on NBC wouldn't have made sense.

I will certainly miss it, as it was a consistent source of world-wide news that I otherwise would not have seen.

That may be one aspect of it, but the small businesses we spoke do don't have any custom icons at all, for anything.
Yeah, it sounds like some are experiencing something different that started with 13.0. Maybe only the 13.2 issue is connected to custom icons?

  • Buy an iPhone 13 mini now because it's going away tomorrow

I currently have the 13 mini, having owned the 12 mini before it. I'm in the Upgrade Program, and the 13 mini is the first iPhone I've kept for more than one year since the Upgrade Program started with the iPhone 6 in 2014. I'd already broken myself of the "latest and greatest" pattern by getting an iPhone 8 Plus instead of a X (I didn't want to pay that much for a phone and wait for developers to figure out how to work with the new design), then an 11 instead of the 11 Pro. The XS was actually the last high end iPhone I owned, between the 8 and the 11.

I've loved carrying a small iPhone for the last (almost) three years. I love the way it slides easily into a front pocket, even with my wallet attached. I love how light it is, and how comfortable it is to hold, especially with the wallet adding some depth. I've never used a case with my minis in order to maintain the "small as possible" footprint, and have never regretted it.

That said, I was pretty sure I wasn't going to keep the 13 mini for a third year, and the small screen has started to feel cramped and limiting. This might just be my brain trying to trick me into accepting the tradeoffs I'll experience with my next phone, though. When I got the 12 mini, I was all about smaller devices: first, the tiny iPhone in 2020; then, replacing my 11-inch 2018 iPad Pro with an iPad mini 6 in 2021. This year, I decided that I just had too many things that would benefit from a larger iPad screen and grabbed a lightly-used M1 iPad Air (and sold the iPad mini), and now I'm debating between a 15 Pro and 15 Plus. On the one hand, most of the high end features (but not the longer zoom of the Max), which I haven't really experienced in a few years; on the other hand, a really big screen and lighter weight. I'm leaning toward the latter - if I'm going to lose out on the pocketability of the mini, I might as well go big, right? - but won't be able to completely decide until after the event.

  • iPhone 15 Pro vs iPhone 14 Pro -- Specs, price, and features, compared

While the 3x optical zoom on the rear camera is correct, I don't believe that the iPhone 14 Pro has "ProRes 4K 60fps with external recording". I believe this was announced as a new feature on the 15 Pro, since the lightning port doesn't have enough bandwidth for that.
