  • BMW temporarily ships cars without Apple CarPlay

BMW has been shipping cars without working turn signals for years, so this is no surprise.

How dissappointing. Even 7 uses the same chip as 6. So we will be two generations behind now. Perfect.
    Behind what?

  • New iPad Air's thin back panel and creaks prompt build quality complaints

What happened to liquid metal? Wasn't that supposed to be very light and very strong?
Apple can’t use it. That technology is owned by Cyberdyne Systems.
They absolute could use it, as they hold an exclusive perpetual licence to use it in commercial electronics. Indeed, they used it for the SIM ejector tool bundled with the iPhone 3GS.

Apple doesn’t use it because they’ve clearly found that other materials suit their needs better.

  • Apple's Self Repair Program toolkit - Hands on with what's inside

    darkvader said:
Ridiculous.  Absolutely ridiculous, and designed to discourage users from doing what is in reality a VERY simple repair that can be done with hand tools.

I've changed dozens of iPhone batteries, and I've never needed any of these ridiculous gizmos.  Simple hand tools are all you need.  If you want to get fancy taking the glass off, use an iSclack.  You can press it back together with your hands, or put a stack of books on it.  Light finger pressure is sufficient to re-glue the battery.
So if it’s “VERY” simple and can be done with hand tools, what’s the problem? People can simply not bother with Apple’s repair solution and do it with those simple hand tools you describe.

Apple’s DIY solution hasn’t replaced other repair methods.

By the way, the tools Apple’s offering here are the ones they use. They’ll be thrilled to hear from you that they can do it much cheaper.

  • Everything Apple Sherlocked in macOS Ventura, iOS 16, and iPadOS 16

Current testing reveals that Apple's offering has an edge as Pixelmator Pro sometimes has difficulty with similarly-colored subjects and backgrounds”

Ha. I’ve seen several videos on YT of Apple’s subject isolation struggling with similarly-colored subjects and backgrounds. So no, Apple has not figured this out. Don’t believe their demo.

  • Apple sued for not paying New York Apple Store staff weekly

    TeeJoroni said:
Apple retail stores have been open for over twenty years. This person worked for 8 years and didn’t quit or file a suit while working? For 8 years the biweekly pay schedule worked somehow? There are 11 Apple stores in NYC alone operating for over 15 years, has the state not noticed what frequency Apple pays thousands of employees? I get the idea that someone wants their earnings as soon as possible, but the money is the same amount it would be either way, it’s how it’s managed between pay checks. Not sure of the merit of this case.
The merit of the case seems to be that - per the article - every other retailer in NYC complies with the law except Apple.

That’s not to say that’ll be the outcome of the case. That’s for the court to decide. But it’s the merit of the case.

    Missed pun opportunities here.

This blockbuster should slot into their line up nicely.

The incremental upgrades on the Apple Watch are not geared towards people upgrading every year, or even every two. I went from a 0 to a 6, and probably won’t upgrade again until a series 9 or 10 at the earliest.
Exactly this. The only reason Apple would significantly bump the chip is if the watch had more sensors that the current crop of chips couldn’t handle.

How many series 6/7 owners are complaining that their watches are too slow

  • Zuckerberg really wants iPhone users to shift to WhatsApp

The encryption point is largely semantic. Yes, users can tether their iPhone to a computer, launch iTunes (Windows) or Finder (Mac), and backup.

But almost no regular user is doing that, and it also requires the user to disable Messages back up from the iCloud settings on the device.

As a general point, Facebook’s claims hold water on this one. People want cloud backups, not to mess about with cables and computers. WhatsApp offers e2e encrypted cloud backup, iMessage doesn’t.

For marketing purposes, it’s all good. Now it’s over to Apple to implement e2e encryption for cloud backups.
