  • HomeKit isn't ready yet for your front door

Does the Netatmo unit suffer the same issues and limitations? I realize the Logitech is cheaper; but if the Netatmo doorbell is better able to handle these issues, that might well justify the extra $100 or so.
I have Netatmo indoor and outdoor cameras. They support HSV, but the Netatmo app is much better. You don't have to activate HSV to use motion detection in Homekit scenes and automation. You also can use the Netatmo app and HSV simultaneously.

Put the mini on its side if you want easy access to the power button. (I don't know which side down is best for heat dissipation.)
Doubt it is designed to use on its side for air flow.  Not doing that if I get one.
The previous mini also wasn't designed to be stood on a side, yet they frequently are mounted that way on desks, on walls, and in server racks. I doubt heat is a problem as  long as the inlet and exhaust vents are not blocked. Fans move air regardless of orientation.

  • How Apple's Aperture created a new class of app on October 19, 2005 and lost it to Adobe L...

I kicked the tires on Aperture and LR (beta) when it was first released and settled on Aperture for it's superior interface and Apple ecosystem integration which were both important to me and never looked back. Aperture works like I do and made a loathsome task (organizing) fun and providing all the editing I needed for 99% of my photos. When Apple pulled the plug, I grudgingly turned to LR which is horribly slow, bloated and non-intuitive although it gets the job done (but the raw conversions still seem to be lacking compared to Aperture). I transitioned because photos was nothing like Aperture and was lacking in it's feature set. In addition, I was scared that Aperture would not keep working with OS updates. Several years later, I dread the task of importing and post-processing and I miss Aperture every day. Apple really dropped the ball on this one. They are flush with cash and never should abandon something like this in my opinion.
You could have delayed the pain of moving to Lightroom for many years. Aperture still works (except for a few minor problems) in Mojave. The user interface still is far better than any other non-destructive photo editor.

  • Parallels Desktop 16.5 released with native Apple Silicon support

So, basically Parallels remains a waste of money for anyone who bought an M1 Mac.

Rehash MY user case; which is probably a significant number of user cases.  Why did I buy Parallels?  Why pay $$ for this program?

So, I can have the CAPABILITY to boot, and run WindowsXP, Windows 7 and Windows10 disk images, and either run programs on my Mac that are not available outside of the Windows environment, so I can play old games I purchased before I switched to the Apple ecosystem, and so I can play more games (emulation mode, which is surprisingly good) on my Mac, and play online with my friends who use PC games.  Open Parallels, run any version of Windows I chose, launch Steam and play online games with my friends (games that are not available on the Mac.

For work, Excel on Windows has the capability to allow me to write scripts in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA); for reasons I don not understand, these advanced libraries are simply not available for the Mac community.  So, while my Excel workbooks have ~60,000 lines of VBA to allow it to link into the corporate database and dateline quality assessment info, I cannot do the same thing with my MSFT Office license for Mac.  So, I have 2 different licenses.

Now, I have no choice but have multiple computers at home.  Because programs that USED TO work flawlessly, no longer function at all.
    Buying an M1 Mac isn't a choice?

  • Apple's 'carbon neutral' claims are misleading, say EU groups

Carbon neutral manufacturing, data centers, and offices aren't the biggest challenge if a company wants to be carbon neutral. To actually be carbon neutral, a company must also account for the carbon generated by use of the products it makes. This is easy to see when looking at oil companies, but it also applies to manufacturers like Apple.

  • Fraudsters target Apple Pay in credit card scams

As always the weakest link in security is between the ears of the idiots who gladly hand over their credentials to anyone who calls them with an offer too good to be true. And there’s no patch for stupid.
These automated scams are getting really sophisticated though. Here is one that ALMOST got me.

Caller ID displayed the name and phone number of my actual bank (which I googled).

    Automated message in perfect English:
"We recently got a purchase request which we blocked the transaction. If you made this purchase, please press 1. If you didn't make this purchase press 2."

Then when you hit a number (which I selected #2):
"Thank you, please enter you ATM card number for verification"

It keep repeating the message to enter the card number. This is where I was like wait a minute and hung up. The automated call kept calling back every minute for the next hour.

I called my bank to make sure there weren't any transactions attempts and they said no, so I notified them of the scam.

A week later, I get another call from a different bank (which I don't have) called me and had the same message (I let it go to voice mail).
I hope "perfect English" was sarcastic.

  • TikToking Apple employee fired over medical leave, not videos

Skepticism is good. However it should be applied to both sides of a disagreement - especially if all of the facts are not known, and especially to the side you are inclined to believe.

Restarting an iPhone frequently provides no benefit for security or anything else. The "shortcut" also is harder to activate than pressing the side button and volume up buttons simultaneously.
