It already has an earphone jack.  It's an adapter that plugs in to the lightning jack.  Included or $9 if you need another.  You don't even kmow it's there when you're using it.

They could simply "deactivate" the SIM and or blacklist the IMEI.  I think that would still allow for 911 calls.  But that's more likely to piss off a customer to the point of switching carriers.  At least this way they're redirected to CS and a person can 'splain it to them, get them in touch with sales, and get them to get a new phone.  It's damage control.

I wonder how long it'll take someone to come up with an iPhone case that has a headphone jack built in (built in dongle.)

More secure, yes. More practical, not sure yet. There comes a point where even if it is more secure than Touch ID, the difference does not have many practical implications. I'm not worried about anyone bypassing my Touch ID, and it seems that the price you need to pay for it, in design, in convenience, and in well, price, is not worth it. The only way it's worth it, is if Apple wants to get a competitive advantage over others manufacturers, and in that way, we end up paying for it. It will probably be like the Touch bar. Might not be worth it, since it will be all touch screens soon. That's were the iPad is already moving to: using a keyboard and a touch screen.

The entire point of FaceID was to shrink the body of the phone down to the screen by eliminating the bottom bezel.  If that's valuable, then it's worth it.
Personally I'm getting the iPhone X for that one specific reason and no others.  I prefer the smaller (non-Plus) size iPhone but want the dual cameras in the Plus size.  The larger screen in the Plus size is nice to have too.  For all intents and purposes it's an iPhone 8 plus in the body of an iPhone 8, and that's exactly what I want.  But I admit that probably a relative few really care that much about the size like I do and that's obvious when people say they'd get an iPhone X Plus because it would be an even bigger screen.
Truth is, I'd probably not have got the iPhone 7 Plus if it weren't for the cameras.  I feel like iPhone X gets me exactly the benefits of Plus in the smaller body.

The more I think about day to day use case of FaceID, the more optimistic I am about it.  The more I pay attention the more inconvenient I realize TouchID can actually be and I realize that if I had FaceID the phone would have already been authenticated seconds ago.  This was specifically apparent when I was at Disneyland and TouchID started failing a lot because my hands were sweaty.  I ended up disabling TouchID for unlock and setting it to a 5 min timeout with pass code.

Part of Gruber's logic depends on the 7S/7S Plus being sold in 64/128/256 at the same price as the current 7 and still offered in all 3 sizes of storage and that there would be no overlap in pricing because who would want to pay more for a smaller iPhone 8 when they could get a larger (capacity) iPhone 7 for less?
They can play games with storage capacities to reduce this paradox, but I think there could be overlap at the top end.  We sort of see this with iPad.  Also, this assumes we won't see the iPhone 7S take any price cut ($30-$100?)

I think it'll simply be $100 more than iPhone 7S.

Assuming the iPhone 7S/7S+ slides in and at the same exact pricing as iPhone 7/7+
*iPhone 7S+ $769/$869/$969 (64GB/ 128GB/ $256GB respectively.
*iPhone 8 at $969/$1069 (for 128 and 256 respectively.)  Or limit it to 256/512GB models keeping the price at $1069/$1169 max.

It seems to be in-line with how Apple generally does business and still marketable.  Anything more expensive just seems embarrassing to me that Apple can't ship a premium edge-to-edge OLED phone at any cost close to what competitors are shipping at.

Why couldn't they have said this? They dismissed it with "courage" which even made me cringe and ridiculed ancient technology (which by the way is still very effective.) They could have easily said that the larger improve camera, battery, and taptic engine required us to finally say goodbye to this space hogging port without making the phone huge.
