  • Virginia launches first COVID-19 exposure notification app in US using Google-Apple API

Our medical practice will recommend today that a couple of large local CALIFORNIA  employers have staff install this Virginia app ASAP.
    Best parts:
    1.  It works in any location.
    2.  The API shares reported notifications “across countries” as a result of EU feedback.  Here in the USA that implies (not guarantees) cross-state functionality when/if other states catch up.

Note the “works in any location” part of this design.  All you need is a meaningful pool of users such as:
1,500 employees at California company A
    or
14,000 employees on the campus of California company B

  • Hands on: Brydge 12.9 Series II keyboard for Apple's iPad Pro aims for MacBook-style feel ...

We bought Brydge keyboards for the medical staff.  Our EHR software runs on it’s dedicated iPad app, and out in the field is noticeably faster than accessing the the same EHR through a browser over cellular (and is more focused on the physician’s input needs).

Each appointment still requires substantial typing as the physician inputs their notes.  Consistently they like these keyboards better than all the other brands we bought over many years.  Never feels like there is any risk of dropping the iPad as they move around during the exam.  Each appointment is lots of pick up, balance on lap, turn to show patient, discuss and document

The iPad apps getting the most use on our machines are the EHR, UpToDate, micromedix,   Atlas the human body (to show patients “here’s where the problem...”) and Safari.

Occasionally back in the office I see a physician reach up to touch their MacBook screen by reflex - but more often I see them camped out on a comfortable couch feet up finishing charts on an iPad Pro with Brydge.

The only time they really want to sit at a desk with MacBook or large iMac is when they are researching tough problems (multiple browser windows side by side) or logging back into a hospital’s systems.

The admin staff on the other hand ask for MacBook Air/Pro or 27 inch iMacs for their work.

  • U.S. Senate, Google ban Zoom days after its launch of 'security council'

Can anyone explain to me how this previously utterly-unknown-to-me Zoom suddenly became the video conference product of choice before the current round of realizations about how shitty it is?
Ease of install by remote users without tech support.

That is also a key source of their problems

Arrrgh.  @heavypound is correct.   I appolgize and retract my early morning statement that we would try this in California for employee clusters -- self-reporting is not supported.  This app requires a six digit pin from VPH (virgina public health) upon confirmation of a positive test result.

    1.  That is what I get for reading fast before dawn, before coffee and not attempting to submit a "positive" as a test.

    2.  THE GOOD:  news coverage says that interoperability between countries (which also implies US states) is now automatically built into the API after feedback from EU countries.

    3.  THE BAD:  we are doing things state-by-state.

  • What to expect from the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max

No iPhone 14 mini ?   Never mind, just bought an iPhone 13 mini yesterday to help me make it thru the desert filled w oversized phones

I don’t want an entry level phone.  I want as much of a beast as Apple can fit into the mini form factor.

A higher percentage of fake Twit accounts may give Elon a “for cause” reason to void the purchase without paying $1B to Twit’s board of Machiavelli-ators.

  • Leaker shares final Apple 'AirTags' design in leaked pairing animation video

That design can't be right. One side has to be flat to mount the tag to a surface.
From what I've seen from this common leak/mockup is that the metal side is flat and with a small lip so that that its edge cen hold many different type of 1st and 3rd part objects, like keychains, with ease.

I hope there is more to the AirTag than simply being a Tile competitor. There are now Bluetooth tags that have built in GPS receivers and talk to each other in a mesh network....
..... to send their locations and that's not being used by ground vehicles at airport, but these aren't small, inexpensive, or using BT.

    https://www.faa.gov/airports/resources/advisory_circulars/index.cfm/go/document.current/documentnumber/150_5220-26
They are larger, obviously. The point is that Bluetooth tags can do a lot more than ping their ID. Here is an example:
    https://www.digitalmatter.com/applications/bluetooth-asset-tracking/
So just to be clear, these conveniently-sized, unobtrusive devices are what you’re arguing as an alternative.

My cat isn’t going to wear that.

Mrs Ray2016 is not going to use that as a key fob.
    Get a bigger cat.

  • 'AirTags' appear to include privacy features to stop unwanted tracking

“I wonder if they will include some sort of time-out feature. If the Air Tag doesn’t sync up with the owner’s phone after a while, maybe it stops transmitting real time information?
This is to help you find your own items (keys, wallet, iPad...) and you are not likely to need to track them for days.  I can even imagine you could disable the time-out feature if you report your device missing or stolen...”
That would be in conflict with the idea of a company placing an air tag on expensive company assets that staff might carry with them. We were looking forward to defining employees home location as a “no track area“ and the tracking would only begin once the employee loaded up the company equipment and went out on the road for the day. It would stop when they returned home.

Our interest is keeping subsequent appointments during the day apprised of arrival times, and locating medical equipment that might be lost/left behind.

Dream preliminary discussions with staff, they felt that was a better plan than sharing their iPhone location.

  • Troubleshoot mac OS Mojave - missing fax functionality in Preview

Brother tech support just replied with a message that faxing is no longer supported on Brother MFC printers with the CUPS driver !!!

That makes these systems way less multi-function than they were before Mojave.  It also stopped the upgrading of all the computers here - now I’m going to have to roll these two Macs back.  Ugh.

This is a significant problem.  Hospitals, emergency rooms, specialists imaging centers and labs do NOT have email addresses that can be used to send patient’s chart notes. (That whole HIPPA confidential thing.)

    Brother’s response:
”...understand that you are unable to use the PC-Fax feature after having upgraded your Macintosh operating system to Mojave 10.14. After reviewing the changes in the upgrade, I was able to confirm that the Send Fax feature of the CUPS driver is no longer supported. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

That being said, please keep in mind that the printer and scanner drivers for Mojave are scheduled to be released later this month. We recommend checking on our Downloads page here for their release.”
