Three days with Apple's new Mac Pro: incredible speed that will accelerate with time
Yes, it will get faster - but this is not due to any major accomplishments by Apple. This is largely due to the work being done by very bright people at AMD/Intel/nVidia - who are enabling Apple to benefit. It would be interesting to benchmark the price/Performance of the A-series chips from Apple in a desktop/server application, against AMD/Intel/nVidia and work in that direction. But, currently - to give credit to Apple, is akin to giving credit to the cock that crows every morning at sunrise. -
Why Apple will move Macs to ARM, and what consumers get
tedz98 said:Saying ARM gives Apple control over the hardware/software stack doesn’t really help me understand the benefits of the switch. If Intel wasn’t missing targets would Apple still be doing this? There’s a bumpy road ahead to make the transition. It will be challenging for users. What about Pro level users? Can ARM work for them? Apple has shown they can integrate ARM processors such as the T2 chip into the existing intel platform. Maybe they should be going after graphics first? Or maybe they want seemless app capability across iOS and MacOS? Or maybe they want just a single OS? Any insights from the experts?
One of the reasons Apple migrated from the Motorola 68xxx to PowerPC, was Motorola's failure to meet self-set milestones and deliver processors as promised. By making the transition to PowerPC, Apple basically had the ability to pit IBM against Motorola on the same PowerPC processor, with the better performing, higher yielding competitor taking the lion's share of the sales. If Intel can't hit milestones - history is basically repeating itself.

AirPods to gain lossless streaming capabilities via software update, says leaker
Most of the music recorded in the past decade or so, simply doesn't have the recording artistry build into it, that was common in the 1970's. There is a reason why artists like Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" was legendary, why people sought after SACD material from certain sources and not across the market. Simply stated, while some bands worked for the "perfect sound" and recording engineers like Alan Parsons made great strides in this - there was a segment that said "who cares", groups like Hall and Oates for example believed that the regular person played their music on a cheap radio, or in a cheap car stereo - so they recorded their music to sound good for that segment. It was fast, it was easier, it was cheaper; and it was the truth. Not many people will spend thousands on their speakers, and thousands on an Amp/Pre-Amp, and then add in a DAC, power conditioner, and pay for Master Recordings. And those recordings were both rare, and expensive.
So, this becomes much ado about nothing.
I would suggest that everyone at least visit a high end audio store, and listen to an expensive headset, or set of speakers, and audition a SACD or Master Recording of something in your taste, that has had the effort and love put into it that is unveiled with lossless audio. There are many bands that made the effort, and once you experience what you have missed; you will never again be satisfied with what passed for "good" now. For decades, the public has dealt with "good enough", but now the bandwidth and technology are allowing truly lossless music to again be available to the masses, at a cost that is comparable to what the regular recording costs. -

Why Apple's smart home speaker dreams are still falling short
I don't know how many times Siri has started playing music (that I neither know, or like) and I have to ask it to stop. All I wanted was a decent sounding speaker to play my TV streaming AppleTV through - that was "better" than the stock speakers in the TV. The thing is, it doesn't sound as good as the cheap speakers in the TV, despite having more than adequate processing power, "better" drivers, and what should be ample power.
It now is the ONLY Apple product that sits on the shelf - unused. The TV built-in speakers sound better, play louder in the downstairs room (my hearing isn't what it used to be). And for the money, I can get a pretty decent soundbar with Sub at Costco - especially with Black Friday just around the corner.
I WANTED to love the HomePod, at $300 it should rival or beat anything in it's price range; it's more of an inconvenience than of practical use. I wish that wasn't the case. -

Supreme Court argument casts doubt on Facebook, Twitter free speech rights
dysamoria said:So long as there continues to be false equivalency presented between that which is harmful garbage opinions & myths/propaganda that contradicts demonstrable facts, and that which is merely an emotional response of “I don’t like what they’re saying”, this will never be a conversation with any rational discourse or reasonable solutions.
A sane society *should* suppress socially-destructive garbage to some degree.
There are cases of conflicting opinions, and there are cases of socially-destructive lying. They’re not the same, and they should never be handled the same way.
What's the point of freedom of speech, if any dissenting opinion is "shouted down" by a crowd? As Thomas Jefferson said about the Freedom of Speech "I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than those attending too small a degree of it." But, what would the know? -

Apple rolls out watchOS 11.3, primarily focusing on bug fixes
I do wish the WatchOS would allow update by Cellular data. Many people have unlimited data on their cell phone - so it should simply be a matter of asking "Are you sure you wish to update the WatchOS using Cellular Data"?
This way, I can do it at the office - which doesn't allow Public Wi-Fi service. I pay for the data plan anyway - and the data is not that great -
