Thanks fo your help, dobby, but another user in a different Unix forum showed me this: echo "nobody:*:-2:-2::0:0:Unprivileged User:/var/empty:/usr/bin/false" | sudo niload passwd . which worked. Appreciate you taking the time though.

I dunno. Get Info says the old version number, a search in Finder says the same old version number, and About has a 2003 date and the old version number. I've rebooted and logged off as well. Edited: It says it was modified on 12/10/04, so someth…

I've never understood why Apple doesn't allow you to pre-order and charge your credit card when they ship, like Amazon does. Wouldn't that let them gauge manufacturing how many CDs (or DVDs) better? Just a thought.

I also have the old Preview and I used the combo update.

Try Calculate Size CM, a contextual menu plug-in here (bottom of page) http://www.pixture.com/macosx.php or here for direct download link: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11354

I'm sure you are correct, but when I look at the hidden files on my HD, a lot of what appear to be core functions start with the "." . That's what concerns me as normally these functions don't change on a daily basis.

I think most people replying are missing my point. I'm not concerned with anything but the root directory permissions (".") being repaired daily. This is what has never happened before, and I don't like the fact that something is messing with the pe…

Thanks for the suggestions. I found a free app (audacity) that will work on MP4 files but not protected tracks. I turned off sound enhancer, and I noticed a small difference. I'll look at audio hijack to see if does what I want. Dare I say, these ap…

Spoke too soon. Speech loaded properly once. Next time it crashed again. I can't get it running. I am baffled.

Never mind about this. I finally got it to work by booting off another HD using 10.3.5 and copying two speech preference files com.apple.speech.prefs.plist com.apple.speech.recognition.AppleSpeechRecognitio n.prefs.plist to the affected HD's…

Unfortunately HP uses Vise installers, not pkg files. Perhaps this is the reason. Edited: There is no receipt in the Library/Receipts folder

I had installed the 10.3.3 update from Software Update yesterday. Then today Apple came out with the combo updater, a little less than 10MB bigger (67.6MB, I think). For a giggle, I downloaded it and installed it. To my surprise, it seems to have ad…

I am impressed with how much Apple has changed with the 10.3.3 update. If you go to System Profiler>Software>Extensions and do a date search, you will see that well over half of all the Apple extensions have been modified and now carry a March…

Brad, Just to make sure I hadn't overlooked anything, I went through every top folder on the startup HD and forced a prebind. The system log reported no errors. Then I restarted. Same thing. All programs in startup file went through prebinding, a…

I think your idea of a maintenance system pref is long overdue in OS X along with a function similar to anachron which would run the maintenance tasks regardless of when your computer was on.
