  • Stupendous idea! Apple should bring that back. If they did it before, they can surely do it again.
  • I've got an UltraATA 133 drive in my ATA 66 iMac. It's working fine, and should continue to do so. There's no reason that you can't do that, and it sounds like either WD makes some ****ed up drives, or else they were pulling your leg.
  • I just burst out laughing when I read "when our powers combine.." and then saw the Captain Planet. Too funny.
  • Oh, those are great. I've seen that site all over the place, but after reading the Apple bit, funny as hell, and imagining all of the idiots falling for it and lambasting the author and arguing about it on forums I just had too much of a heada…

  • How can you not have a startup disc? Trying to hax0r your school's computers to do things you aren't allowed to? These types of barriers are put in place for a reason... if that's the case, don't expect much help from around here.
  • To be VERY basic... A cassette in this instance uses magnetic signals to store data which is interpreted digitally. Same as a floppy disk or hard disk, just different size/shape/speed (well, and probably way of formatting the signals on the casse…
  • Most ad vendors/brokers only have fairly vague categories of ads like health and fitness, computers and technology, adult entertainment, wireless spy cams, etc etc. Since Macs happen to be computers/technology, that's probably why. But who knows,…
  • I've been around since early-to-mid '99, IIRC, and while the people have changed, the forums haven't much. We've been through a lot of ups and downs (and offs ), changes, updates, fiascos, dry spells, and influxes of lamers. But we're still here..…
  • I heard (read, actually) that the Apple name was just a random name for the company that came about because Woz was eating an apple (probably caramelized) at a baseball game. The first logo was a large, complicated drawing of Sir Isaac under a tree,…
  • I am not sure what Microsoft stands to gain from Internet Explorer on the Mac (here are some things I'd guess, though-- control, monopoly, better acceptance of MS-invented web technologies by making them multi-platform, less Mac users who are so veh…
  • Applenut, I really liked it both in person and the specs too. I put a side-by-side (well, sort of) comparison of specs on the first page of this thread. The only downside is really that it's so expensive. I don't really care about PCI slots (it's al…
  • Yeah... PowerMacs are sure in some sad shape. But the price thing has always been an Apple 'hallmark,' if you will. I am looking at getting new hardware soon.. and I need a new PC as much as I need a new Mac. So I'm looking at where I could sp…
  • [quote]Originally posted by dividend: interesting ideas. for the general user (who is that? Mr. Joe?) is he not better off with OS X than with linux? You know what, of course he is. You're right. That gives me a different idea for a reply to …
  • Yeah, I agree to those concessions.. And I knew I would end up confusingly mixing the truths of Linux and that of the enterprise server, which are realistically two different worlds right now. But I thought the author would have done better to compa…
  • I'm not exactly a full-blown lun1x geek, but I am surrounded by them in real life and online. I think that there are quite a few really valid reasons why Linux/*nix and Mac OS X consist of some different markets: 1. Price. Mac hardware is expensi…
  • You have a lot of good points about the printer stuff. I've had endless issues with my machines and printing (both iMacs, both with Epson Stylus Color 740s, which are supposed to be supported..), which I never had in OS 9. And I never liked the Choo…
  • [quote]Originally posted by Mac The Fork: "OS 9 thinking" seems better to me for the purpose of organising my files. I want my stuff at the top level of a hierarchy, not the system's stuff. Perhaps instead of Macintosh HD showing up on the desktop,…
  • [quote]Originally posted by alcimedes: OS X is hard to use. not impossible hard, but it's not easy. to me that doesn't matter all that much, i'm used to windows, but what about all the old school mac folks? like partitioning your drive into di…
  • Ignoring how this should be in the forum called "Suggestions" ( ), I don't think that is a good idea simply because it would lend to more confusion and be completely useless. Locking threads and leaving them where they are and then moving the activ…
