Well, that sounds like an innocent-enough question

Actually, now I remember, the 6800 in Motion shines. Bests the x800 slightly, I think. Tossing up the 9650 and 6800 myself at the moment but don't do enough motion stuff so will go with the 9650, upgrade later.

According to barefeats, the x800 and the 6800 produce the same amount of noise. It's just that the 6800 is huge. Unless you're going with the dual 30" displays though, the x800 is the way to go. Better antialiasing for less penalty, faster core, muc…

It'll last you four years, but you're right about getting the best vid. card and a swag of ram. Very worthwhile. The iBooks are cool but the screens are pretty small and I don't think they yet support video spanning - powerbooks have the dvi video o…

On a general note, I don't think we should get our hopes up for any extraordinary advances in OpenGL with 10.3.7. I'd guess it's more of a maintenance release while the real work goes into Tiger and (maybe) a really cool OpenGL 2.0 implementation. I…

Kickaha, man, I'm glad there's non of that disputing stuff between us!! Just on an associated note - I'm often amazed at the amount of apps/peripherals which run flawlessly both simultaneously and on old hardware. I don't know if this is just a…

Kickaha, I don't think it's disputed that OpenGL performance in many 3D apps lag their windows counterparts - C4D has half the screen redraw performance on macs of similar hardware to their PC counterparts. While C4D makes this stark, other 3D apps …

Kotatsu, Yeah, you can see pc's from macs and vice versa. Just plug-in to the network, turn on windows sharing on the mac (network preferences), set a drive/folder up to share on the pc and look in your network control panel - should be right. …

jbryan459, I forgot - I use MYOB AccountEdge 2 extensively too - great product, very stable on a Mac. Haven't tried it on PC. I'd get something upgradeable for CoreImage down the track - GPU's are going to take more and more of a role in user…

jbryan459, Like vox barbara I have a pb g4 1Ghz, and also a DP800 and a new HP 2.8 with hyperthreading, 512Mb Ram, XP Pro etc etc The only thing I'd get a windows machine for is games and 3D work - openGL is just faster on the windows side. A …

mnarciso, I'm a designer and have the 15" - if you have the money go the 15". The 12 is fine but you really appreciate the extra real-estate - I also connect another LCD somethimes at home and the GPU pushes that great too. Other than that, t…

RandyCat, Even VPC doesn't often drag the system down - a few times a year maybe. If that's as bad as it gets, I think we're doing okay I'd be interested to see what Microsoft can do with VPC 7 - they might just make something worthwhile. If …

ThousandStars, VPC will run most any PC program - I've used it with everything from graphics apps (*shudder*) to obscure little TFTP programs. The only thing is it will run MUCH slower than you would be used to. I guess it really depends how much…

zhenboy, I just installed VPC 5.0 on 10.3.4 on a 15" alu 1Ghz. Runs like a charm with W2000. Quite quick but then again I haven't been able to even install successfully on any other version of Panther - this just seems like that sort of flakey ap…

Web and print design. Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, Flash, Director, Protools, BBedit. Most of what I really sweat is detail and I think I'd have a hard time noticing the minute speedup over small operations a current G5 would bring. My 15" Al and …

For any medical types out there - osirix Fantastic DICOM viewer - just reached 1.1 after 6 months development!! Runs great on 15' powerbook. Really amazing he gives it away - and the source! I'll second what people have to say about Desk…

podmate, I had a hailstorm rip through my roof here in Sydney and rain all over an open powerbook. Put it in the oven at 50C for a few hours and started it up. Been working great ever since - ca.4 years, maybe more - 3400 powerbook. Just went to …
