Well, well, well if it isn't my nemesis, johnsonfromwisconsin... heh. Don't bother with some of the people on this forum, who like to knock the P4 because its demonstrably faster than a dual Gig. People who think that the northwood is a shi…

I'll believe it when I see it. Many, many things get developed in the labs of Motorola and IBM...implementing them in chips that Apple can use is a far different exercise.

[quote]and gyess what? the fastest ATA drives only transfer at 45MB/sec. well within the limits of ATA/66 applenut, remember when I said ATA-66 was good enough for most people? What did you say? "wah...not for me....wah"

How does one propose to put a G3/4/5 in a portable device that can do "voice and handwriting recogition, finger print and face recognition log in, streaming video (MPEG4 if it ever makes it out), games, etc. etc etc...", even more to the point, how …

Hmmm...last time I looked printers and routers weren't exactly portable? Next time, think before you open your mouth. Running X on a portable? Yeah...I'd like to introduce your to my iBook and my PowerBook, both of which run X. I think Apple…

yeah...im sorry didn't catch this bit when i was reading the thread [quote]PLEASE, no flames. PLEASE, no PDA war threads. carry on...

OMFG!!!!!!! The stupidity of the first post boggles the imagination? Why? Why would you want that much processing power in a fscking portable device? WHY? Just so you could say that you have a G5 in your Apple PDA? Gawd! Get your head out of y…

JW Pepper..shut up. IT doesn't matter if you were wrong or right. But anyway, have a cookie. I would love to see a 17" LCD. I would love to see Apple differentiate the line a bit and have a higher iMac-class consumer computer with a meatier bu…

Gamblor...maybe you should spend more time in the BF...heh BLAST is a database search that allows you to do sequence similarity searches for polypeptides and polynucleotides.

Apparently, some people here don't understand the nature of the Book E specification. Book E compliant -CPUs, by design and definition, are able to accept specific application-specific processing units (APUs). AltiVec, as you might imagine, is con…

Oh, I'm sorry, would you care to link to the Motorola G5 roadmap where it magically details Motorola's plans for the processr?

I never said anything about AMD vs. Intel. but... take a deep breath...and realize that those Xeons were running a crippled memory subsystem...realize that those Xeons weren't northwoods....realize that dual CPU comparisons are x^2 more complicated…

I don't want this thread to turn into a CPU battle....but the P4 is not a bad CPU. Go to toms hardware and search for "northwood" and then search for "overclock" and behold the 3GHz p4.

The p4 does not suck. Shut up. Its expensive, but then again, so are PowerPC CPUs. Like the G4 with AltiVec-heavy code, the P4 benefits most when it can be quickly fed data. Hence, the development of RDRAM technology (which also, does not suck, …

[quote]um...yeah... or "Single instruction multiple data" yeah...because spelling out an acroynm is adequate explanation? Please, go fantasize about wireless mice.

Generally speaking, SIMD is teh general term for architecture like AltiVec or SSE2. Specialized areas of the CPU are dedictated to perform a certain type of operation on certain data sets.

[quote]If motorola does not use Altivec in the G5 a 2GHz processor just wont be same. I may hang on to my G4's for a while. I'll bet you an iPod (a 10GB one) that the G5 will have a SIMD that can accept AltiVec-optimized code.

Hi there. I got the original 400 MHz Powerbook G4, and now I've got a combo 550. I wouldn't say this computer is slow when running X at all. The only time it slows a bit is when I'm ripping a CD. I've just finished making a brochure with Illustr…

JD: OMG I would so buy a 17 inch iMac if Apple had the balls to do it. Alot of people I've spoken to think that the iMac is a great computer. Its really almost there for them...I think that a 17 inch iMac would be a phenomenal seller. Geez...I…

I use both an iBook 500 and a combo 550 PowerBook on a regular basis. I think you may need to revisit your setup if you think the iBook can hang with the PowerBook in X and 9. I've got 640 MB in the iBook and 768 MB in the PowerBook. Since I'm ex…
