MASSIVE HARD DRIVE FAILURE is right. Chirping is characteristic of almost-dead drives. If you wanna live on the wild side and use it for a little while longer, go to Disk Utility and check the S.M.A.R.T. status to verify this. Either way, your be…

That's pretty evil, especially if they're not all that computer-savvy. Make sure you only do this to those who truly deserve it, as only the lowest of the low torment innocent people for their own fun. \

You can in fact option-drag to select text in any OS X application. I love this feature.

There are no OS X viruses. None at all. And if they existed, you'd probably have to give them permission to run yourself. Don't worry about a thing. If Macs ever become as ubiquitous as PCs, there might be some more problems, but as it is, low i…

I hope they fix the memory leak issue. After about 3 or four hours of browsing, I've always got at least a gig of ram "inactive" (as opposed to "free").

OWC's drives are pure gold. I bought one last year and it's fantastic, and it came with a bunch of shareware and Retrospect Express. Good deal. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/fw800-drives/

Some of my friends and I set up our computers with a router to play networked games of CnC generals. I was the only one with a firewall on and everybody else could see me, but I couldn't see them. Turning it off solved the problem, but I'd rather …

Um, you can export anything to PDF in any OS X application. Just click on the PDF lozenge in the bottom left of the print dialog. Pages is nothing special in that respect, I'm afraid.

I had the exact same problem right after I upgraded to Tiger. After some hair-pulling, I solved the problem by throwing out all the stuff in my startup items folder. Dunno why that worked, but it did. You might be having the same problem if you'v…

Could you use Automator to search and destroy those resource forks? Might be the first time anyone's used the thing.

I highly recommend a Kensington Expert Mouse (it's a trackball, despite the name) for Maya. I use both, and the 'ball is just perfect. I've got buttons set up for Maya-specific tasks, and the design drastically cuts down on wrist strain during tho…

If you're dissatisfied, send Apple a line and report it as a bug. Sooner or later, it'll be addressed.

Have you tried Software Restore in the Utilities folder? It works for apps, though I don't know if what you're looking for would be there.

Actually, I just fixed the problem by throwing out all the stuff in my startup items folder. There was some junk left over from Panther that was conflicting for some reason, so I reinstalled it and now it shuts down fine.
-
There should be a PDF that came with your computer that'll show you how to upgrade the internals.

Try using Disk Utility to verify your Panther disk, check permissions, and do all that stuff. If basic maintenance won't work, try installing on another disk to see if it's a DVD problem.

I don't think you can immediately tell. I've got a Q2DE-capable card and it was off by default, so I turned it on using the plist editor.

Actually, I was referring to doing a clean install with MA. And the "important stuff" is 14.8 Gb of CGI work, including the full version of Maya 6.5 Unlimited. Not something I want getting thrown away. If MA won't preserve it, I'll just create an…

Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question, but does Migration Assistant copy everything from your cloned drive? I ask this because I have lots of important stuff on the root level of the drive but not in the Applications folder. Will MA copy t…
