you could try data rescue 1.1.1 or filesalvage 5.1 which both can recover data these may also see the drive. Also have you tried running disk warrior 4 or TechTool Pro 4.5.2 to see if they can see the drive they can also repair any sirectory prob…

OK your boot partition maybe ok but have some errors in it which should be able to be fixed by booting from the Install CD/DVD and running disk utility from it. You could also try Disk Warrior 4. Lets know who you get on

If you are running 10.4.8 it more than likely is spotlight indexing your HD. This can cause the HD noises as it seems to do it more when idle.

Can you give some more info. Which app was being used when the error showed up? Which system version? Are all the updates applied? Have you tried repairing the permissions? Have you checked the HD for errors via disk utility? What …

Disk Warrior is another app which can detect and repair errors also Tech Tool Pro is another. If you don't and know somebody who has a retail version try and borrow it to run it as it will also do the same thing.

You would be better off getting an external HD of around 200+ gig these come in Firewire/USB2 or USB2. You could then move the files to it and be able to use them from the external HD and free up some Internal HD space.

If you do use virtual PC be sure and choose windows 2000 as it will running much better than XP. I am on PPC iMac G5 and run both win 2000 and XP and find win 2000 faster and more usable.
