He's right about one thing, though. Facebook's interests are absolutely aligned with their customers'. What he neglects to mention is that the customers are the advertisers, not the users.

It's not impossible that Apple might have more than 100% of the profit share eventually. That's insane, really.

My guess is that while MCX claims not to fine members for supporting NFC payments, they will refuse to process transactions for them, essentially forcing them to make an either/or decision. I really don't think this calculus adds up in MCX's favor.

Samsung has already harvested all the low-hanging fruit. Copying the iPhone UI and hardware is not much of a technical challenge, and the low-end competitors who are eating Samsung's lunch are now demonstrating that copying the copy is even easier. …

The CTA's "Ventra" system, which is usually pretty awful, is based on NFC so you can already use Apple Pay to board the 'L' and Chicago buses. I've tried it and it works great, although I don't know how great it will be in the winter when you'll hav…

Those screenshots look exactly like Mint.

Now that mid-to-low end Android phones are "good enough" for most customers, high end Android phones are a harder sell. They're getting squeezed from the low end by commodity device makers and suffering from their own channel stuffing practices. T…

If this picture is real, it looks like they might cover the entire top of the phone with glass instead of embedding it in the sides of the aluminum case. And just eyeballing it, the bezel looks narrower too. This would let them increase the width of…

I bought one of these about a month ago. I'm using it with a late 2013 iMac, so it doesn't have Thunderbolt 2. But I do see roughly the same performance as in the review. Real-world performance does tend more toward the 300 MB/s range, which, since …

Wait, they're going to charge a fee that will raise $1.5 million, and the money will be used to pay for the cost of collecting the $1.5 million? Do I have that right?

This all started when Apple rejected Sony's e-reader app for iOS, saying that they were going to enforce the in-app purchase requirement. So let's assume this will apply to Amazon, too. Amazon already has a 70/30 split with the publishers. If Apple …

I work for an insurance company. This sounds wonderful.

Now all he has to do is disassemble it and break it and it'll be just like two months ago!

Pre-authorization is not the same thing as an reservation or a pre-order. Pre-authorization is the bit where you put in some details and they tell you if you're eligible or not. If you've pre-ordered, they're going to ship one to your door; you'r…

While I like the new Windows Live Messenger -- it's the first client I've used that doesn't sign me out of my desktop Messenger -- it doesn't support fast app switching on iOS 4.0 and it takes like 15 seconds to relaunch each time. Come on, Microsof…

I'm not surprised by this, and I'm also not surprised by the news that Android phones are outselling iPhones. Here's why. People who buy Android phones fall into one of two categories: people who know what they're getting and people who just want a …

With the iPad, Apple's proven that iPhone OS is the right operating system for a device like this. This makes total sense. Plus, there have been whispers of a cloud-based iTunes for some time now. I'd expect this to launch at the same time (or at le…
